DESCRIPTION
The UCSD Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty 14 clinical fellows, 4 Assistant Project Scientists/Postdoctoral Fellows. The department is composed of 7 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Family Planning and Urogynecologic and Reconstructive Surgery. The department is currently ranked 3rd in the nation in NIH funding among ObGyn departments.
Manage all aspects of extracellular vesicle and particle research (EVP) in the Laurent Laboratory, and oversees and supervises laboratory aspects of the UCSD EXCITE Lab. Oversees and directs the daily operations in these lab areas, as well as supervise and direct personnel. Responsible for hiring, training, coaching, guidance, supervision, and all performance related evaluations of laboratory personnel. Responsible for overseeing the processing, transportation, shipping and storage of biospecimens, and the data collected from the research specimens. Supervise the inventory, retrieval, and documentation of specimens in the laboratory biobank. Contribute written reports on laboratory findings, which are used in but not limited to; grant submissions, revisions and renewals; funded research study progress reports; and laboratory and facilities assessments. Contribute to scientific presentations for both internal seminars at UCSD and presentations given at scientific conferences.
Attend and contribute to lab group and subgroup meetings. Generate data sets for collaborating investigators to assist with their studies and subsequent publications. Act as a liaison with various research collaborators with whom we share specimens and exchange data. Oversee relevant equipment, including specimen freezers and the associated alarm monitoring system. Supervise the ordering of laboratory supplies and related equipment. Assure compliance with UCSD and Cal OSHA, regulations. Lead laboratory personnel training with regards to EH&S regulations and the use of new bio-safety equipment. Develops training programs for lab staff, post-docs, and trainees as necessary to maintain laboratory safety, data accuracy and specimen integrity.
Makes recommendations to Principal Investigator (PI) for the purchase of laboratory equipment, re-vitalization of current equipment and hoods. Maintains Biosafety Level 2 (BL2) standards in these labs under EH&S and Cal OSHA guidelines. Coordinates personnel assignments to ensure that all areas of core research are adequately staffed to meet project commitments. Respond to freezer alarm distress calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet the goals. Oversees the activities and staff of a laboratory including the supervision of all levels of research / instructional associates and laboratory support staff. Typically works in a large or multi-facility laboratory (ies). Supervises the development and execution of major or multi-disciplinary research projects or instructional and experiment design. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.
Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects.
Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
Effective interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise all levels of staff.
Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 – $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 – $59.53
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
