DESCRIPTION
The Senior Director of Capacity Management will oversee a highly complex patient flow and bed capacity system across four hospitals, two Emergency Departments, and two large perioperative suites. This includes coordinating daily patient transfers between hospitals to accommodate specialty services and optimize bed capacity. Additionally, the Senior Director will manage the transfer center for accepting transfers from outside hospitals.We are seeking a strategic and visionary leader to create and lead a new central capacity command center. The role involves transforming our current manual processes into a state-of-the-art predictive analytic model with real-time electronic dashboards to optimize patient flow and resource allocation.
The Senior Director will be entrusted with formulating and administering policies and programs, managing significant human, financial, and physical resources with a high degree of autonomy. They will be responsible for ensuring department resources are effectively stewarded, and systems and procedures are in place to safeguard organizational assets.In this position, the Senior Director will actively participate with leadership to develop both short- and long-term strategies, while fostering change management skills in subordinate leadership to cultivate an agile and flexible workforce.
Additionally, the Senior Director will represent nursing on cross-functional committees and maintain an external presence in community and professional organizations and societies. RESPONSIBLITIES
Strategic and Operational Planning: Provide strategic and operational planning for staffing, fiscal, and material resources. Participate in developing and implementing new systems, policies, and programs, ensuring compliance with agency regulations and professional standards.
Financial Planning and Management: Develop, implement, and monitor short- and long-term financial plans for patient care services. Work with senior management on fiscal planning proposals.
Workforce Planning and Talent Development: Forecast workforce planning and talent development needs. Contribute to the creation of annual staffing plans based on organizational strategy, patient acuity, benchmarks, and staffing data. Allocate resources efficiently to achieve quality objectives.
Management and Oversight of a Patient Acuity System: Implement and manage a patient acuity system for accurate and timely patient needs assessment. Your system will enhance patient safety and resource utilization, ensuring patients receive the appropriate level of care.
Transport and Lift Team: Oversee the transport and lift team, facilitating seamless patient transfers between units and hospitals to accommodate specialty services and create necessary bed capacity. Your coordination skills will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care.
Central Staffing/Scheduling: Develop and implement a centralized staffing and scheduling system, ensuring optimal allocation of human resources across all facilities. Your expertise in workforce planning will enable efficient operations and elevate patient care outcomes.
Engagement with Professional Associations and Community: Engage with professional associations, community leaders, and elected officials to provide insights on healthcare needs, including cost management, overcoming economic barriers, and securing resources for patient education.
Introduction of Advanced Technologies: Lead the development of business plans to introduce advanced technologies for patient care services, following best practices.
Shared Governance and Core Competencies: Cultivate a shared governance structure among managers and staff, fostering a collaborative environment that improves nursing and patient care outcomes. Ensure the development of core competencies and assessment plans in nursing care.
Mentorship and Leadership Development: Facilitate ongoing mentorship and leadership/professional development programs for nurse leaders. Collaborate with senior leaders to build a succession planning pipeline for nurse leadership.
System-Wide Committees and Planning: Collaborate in system-wide committees and strategic planning with senior leadership to create coordinated care plans for all patient populations across various services (e.g., outpatient, children’s, cancer center).
Guidance on Bargaining Unit Issues and Contract Negotiations: Provide guidance on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations for nursing and patient care services. Facilitate issue resolution and ensure consistent approaches for organizational benefit.
Decedent Affairs: Lead our Decedent Affairs program, providing compassionate support to bereaved families during difficult times. Your commitment to dignity and empathy will enhance our end-of-life care services.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s OR Master’s Degree in Nursing required, and eight (8) or more years of relevant experience.
Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.
Experience and proven success in hospital operations in a multi-hospital setting, knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the multidisciplinary team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred.
Certification in relevant area (e.g. CCRN, CNML)

Annual Full Pay Range: $125,600 – $314,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $60.15 – $150.57
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
