The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs over 450 full time faculty, 322 residents, fellows and postdocs and 480 staff personnel. After the establishment of the Cardiovascular Institute, the division of Cardiovascular Medicine has grown to include 70+ faculty members. Our research space is co-located within several buildings on and off campus including the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), Clinical Teaching Facility (CTF), the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and on the La Jolla campus, the Salk institute for biological studies, the Biomedical Research Facility-2 and the San Diego VA Medical Center.
The Cardiovascular Clinical Research is a rapidly expanding, multi-million dollar, highly complex Academic Research entity, within the Cardiovascular Institute which requires unique strategic planning for the establishment and maintenance of complex multi-center clinical trials of varying sizes. With the emergence of new sub-specialty branches and more specialized teams of investigators within the Cardiovascular Institute and the division of Cardiovascular Medicine, it is becoming crucial for the bigger Cardiovascular Clinical Research to move towards creation of smaller and uniquely specialized research units in order to appropriately address the needs of each emerging sub-specialty. This task requires an ongoing assessment of current organizational structure along with effective communication among multiple University Departments and Divisions (Medicine, Bioengineering, Laboratory Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, SPO, OCTA, OCGA) to ensure that scientific, budgetary, personnel, study and space issues are coordinated and addressed.
Currently UCSD Cardiovascular Clinical Research is a national and international leading site for the conduction of the Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA) and by collaborating with the division of Pulmonology holds one of the largest national BPA registries. At the same time UCSD is a pioneer in the gene therapy for multiple rare Cardiovascular Diseases, including Danon Disease. UCSD Cardiovascular Research is also one of the leading international sites on Robotic Interventions.
The incumbent acts on behalf of the Principal Investigators (PIs) of the Cardiovascular Institute on clinical operational matters for the Cardiovascular Clinical Research and provides support to the Vice Chair of Cardiovascular Clinical Research within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine to ensure compliance according to Federal Regulations with clinical research protocols involving human subjects. This role has significant autonomy to achieve research goals and objectives, ensure that Good Clinical Practices are adhered to and directs and supervises more than 100 active clinical trials and research projects conducted within the Cardiovascular Clinical Research group.
Major sponsored projects conducted at the Cardiovascular division include: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Network; Department of Defense grants, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Grants, UCSD ACTRI, numerous NIH-sponsored investigator-initiated (R01, R21, UO1, UM1, etc) grants, and numerous Pharmaceutical Industry sponsored clinical trials.
Duties involve oversight and management of all Cardiovascular Research staff responsible for conducting various aspects of research programs and also include oversight and direction in conducting performance evaluations, determining and conducting disciplinary actions, directing recommendations for reclassification, developing Cardiovascular Research specific job descriptions, screening and interviewing job applicants, making salary determinations and hiring and on-boarding selections. Develops strategies for deployment and allocation of resources, research and administrative space, fiscal coordination, management of budgets and resources, and oversight of each of these tasks to ensure goals and objectives of each project are met in a timely manner.
