Position:
The College of Fine Arts and Communication, Department of Music, invites applications for a full-time 9-month Lecturer in Jazz/Commercial Guitar with complementary teaching areas in jazz ensembles, jazz fundamentals, jazz improvisation and arranging, jazz techniques for music educators, or CORE curriculum courses. The appointment begins August 2024.  

Qualifications:
MM or MFA in music.  A working professional with a BM, BA, or BFA and at least 5 years of high-level professional experience in guitar performance may also be considered.

All candidates must possess the following:
    A significant record of jazz/commercial guitar performance as both soloist and ensemble artist across multiple styles, genres, and multi-media.
    Strong skills as an instrumental improviser and composer.
    Experience in work across multiple professional settings within the jazz/commercial discipline or related fields.
    Minimum of five (5) years of applied teaching experience at the University level or in an established private studio.
    A defined scholarship/creative activity agenda which includes solo/ensemble performances in jazz/commercial guitar or related scholarly/creative interests.
    Demonstrated success teaching courses in one of the complementary teaching areas: jazz techniques for music educators, jazz ensembles, jazz fundamentals, jazz improvisation and theory, jazz arranging, jazz repertoire, or CORE curriculum courses.
    A record of successful recruitment and retention of students.
    A desire to engage in service-related duties at the Departmental and College level.

Responsibilities:
Lecturers are assigned an instructional workload of eight (8) course units or the equivalent in applied instruction per academic year. Teach applied jazz/commercial guitar to majors and non-majors (which may include online instruction) and conduct a weekly masterclass with jazz/commercial colleagues. Teach jazz/commercial guitar ensembles, jazz combos or other ensembles as assigned and based upon candidate’s expertise. Mentor and instruct students for real-world professional job opportunities. Teach additional courses as assigned based upon candidate’s expertise and profile which may include jazz techniques for music educators, jazz fundamentals, jazz improvisation and arranging, , CORE curriculum courses or Towson Seminar [TSEM]. Oversee the preparation of student degree recitals. Adjudicate end-of-semester juries, incoming auditions, and degree recitals. Engage in scholarship/creative activities and service commensurate with the expectations for lecturers at Towson University. Support recruitment efforts within the Department of Music. Contribute to the administrative duties of the Jazz/Commercial Division. Contribute to the ongoing diversity and inclusion initiatives at Towson University. Work collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff and additional duties based upon applicant qualifications and departmental needs.

The Department of Music (http://www.towson.edu/music) is committed to fostering a learning community that mirrors the face of the population surrounding the campus, regionally and Statewide. The Department enrolls a diverse student population of approximately 260 students served by 27 full-time and over 50 part-time faculty.  This comprehensive music program offers a variety of concentrations in Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees.  The NASM accredited program is housed in the Center for the Arts.
