Senior Research Computing Facilitator

Posting Summary:
As Senior Research Computing (RC) Facilitator, serve in a critical role to support research computing needs across UVM. Directly support UVM’s goal of enhancing IT resources and infrastructure available to the UVM research community. Assist researchers with software and services to accelerate research productivity, and leveraging of UVM’s RC infrastructure, which includes the Vermont Advanced Computing Center’s HPC cluster systems, RC Virtual machines and Research Storage clusters. Develop and provide hands-on training workshops and documentation on various topics related to Research Computing, HPC, and use of the VACC clusters. Engage with faculty to promote the effective use of technology resources through expert knowledge of RC software and hardware systems.
Provide outreach and engagement of new users who would benefit from advanced computation. Work with other IT staff to install, maintain, and support research software and tools used by the UVM research community. Respond to a wide range of requests submitted by researchers, providing guidance in software installation, software configuration, and the use of HPC package managers such as Spack. Provide job scheduler support, effective use of available hardware resources, and assistance with software troubleshooting and porting applications to the UVM environment.
Support research workflows and data movement via Globus or other automated tools. Support services such as Open OnDemand and Jupyter Notebook to enhance academic use of HPC resources and deploy new software for cluster users.Collaborate with RC IT staff to evaluate how to improve services and contribute to planning efforts for future grants, equipment and software for RC services. Collect and assess community needs and communicate data-driven feedback to the team to help guide the new features and services that will benefit UVM research.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience):
Bachelor’s degree in STEM related field and five years of experience with high performance computing systems and scientific software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience with HPC architectures, and appropriate use of CPUs, memory, storage, interconnects, and GPU architectures required. Familiarity with HPC technologies, such as job schedulers like Slurm, package managers like Spack, Open OnDemand, and MPI libraries. Expertise installing software on Linux-based systems, often from source. Experience with academic research software such as Python, Jupyter, R, Matlab, Amber, GROMACS. Scripting and/or programming experience, ideally with multiple languages such as C, C++, Python, Perl, bash, Fortran required. Experience with software version control such as Git. Strong technical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to think creatively about technical challenges. Excellent customer service experience and ability to build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated success at learning and evaluating new technologies, and ability to determine if appropriate for adoption. Ability to work effectively on team and independent projects, with ability to self-direct and adjust to shifts in priorities.
Desirable Qualifications:
Fluency in debugging, parallelization, optimization, and tuning of software applications on HPC clusters, experience with common scientific libraries and applications. Experience creating, using, and updating automated testing. Experience working at an academic institution. Familiarity with Linux systems engineering and understanding of Linux systems deployment. Experience with MongoDB administration. Experience developing containers for HPC software deployment. Experience with building software using CUDA, HIP or OpenCL libraries on GPU hardware desirable.
