DESCRIPTION: The East Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center – Plant Sciences Unit (ETREC – PSU) is a 212-acre field laboratory that supports the research, teaching and outreach activities of faculty, research associates, and graduate students of The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA). Research efforts currently underway at the ETREC – PSU include soybean/corn genetics and variety testing; weed, insect and disease control; turfgrass science and management, including the Center for Athletic Field Safety; cover crops and conservation tillage; genetics and management of native warm-season grasses; specialty crops; ten greenhouses; field site for the UTIA Tennessee Tree Improvement Program; wildlife biology and more. Qualifications
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Research Associate will provide oversight and management of research protocols conducted by faculty. Duties include, but are not limited to, planning research, laying out trials, planting experimental trials, managing pests, harvesting crops, and collecting, compiling and assimilating data. Additional duties include working with the Farm Manager to maintain the ETREC database of current field maps/records and other research-related information, etc. Position works closely with faculty, research associates, and graduate students in the assignment of research plot space and implementation of research projects; coordinating and assisting with planting, maintenance and harvesting of research plots; maintaining inventory of equipment and inputs; maintenance and upkeep of equipment, irrigation systems and all facilities of the unit; hosting tour groups, field days, special events, and other outreach efforts; working collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues in UT Extension and the Herbert College of Agriculture; and performing other duties as assigned by the ETREC Director and/or Farm Manager. The job requires a working knowledge of agronomic research methodology and protocols, plot layout and experimental design, an appreciation of statistics; and a working knowledge of farm equipment and machinery, modern agricultural practices, farm laboratory safety including proper application of crop protection products, and the ability to work, communicate, and collaborate well with people.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in agriculture required by time of hire. 5 years’ row crop/agronomy/plant sciences or related farm experience required. Master’s degree in agriculture with 2 years’ row crop/agronomy/plant sciences or related field and research center experience preferred.
The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills; the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time appropriately; the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; the ability to be a self-starter; the ability to manage multiple projects and activities. Must be able to work and communicate effectively with multiple constituents including faculty, research assistants/associates, administrative assistants, students, industry partners, farmers, vendors, contractors, visitors, unit staff, and other ETREC personnel.
Experience in greenhouse management, plus farm practices such as proper soil testing and fertilization techniques, application of pesticides, tillage, and planting practices for a variety of crops, operation of farm tractors, combines, and other equipment, is highly preferred. Demonstration of leadership and
supervisory skills is preferred. Experience with appropriate software and technology such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred.
Candidates must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and around dust and pollen and be able to have flexibility in work hours (occasional work on weekends and/or evenings).
Valid TN driver’s license is required. Possession of Category C10 (Demonstration, Research and Regulatory Pest Control) certification through the Tennessee Department of Agriculture for purchase, use and supervision of restricted-use pesticide application, or the ability to obtain within 2 months of employment is required. Applicant must be currently authorized to work in the U.S.
