7:00 am – 3:30 pm; Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.
Mandatory Position
This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather.
Primary Purpose of Position:
This is a Facility Maintenance Technician (Electrical Trades). The position is considered to be fully functioning in the electrical trade area. This position may also be given the opportunity to perform/learn another trade. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in assigned zones.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Essential Job Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Tasks include maintenance, repair, and alteration of Commercial Electrical Systems and equipment requiring the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and adherence to safety.
2. Responsible for performing routine maintenance to ensure that commercial electrical systems run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and/or the physical condition of the building does not deteriorate.
3. Perform electrical testing and monitoring of commercial electrical systems and make a recommendation for improvement/repair.
4. Diagnose commercial electrical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary.
Other Work Responsibilities:
1. Function as a lead worker and be called upon to provide technical assistance and mentor other facility maintenance technicians as required.
2. Demonstrate a solid knowledge of fire, building, electrical, and mechanical codes to maintain compliance with State, Federal, and University regulations and standards.
3. Work with minimal supervision or instruction to complete work with a high level of competence and professionalism in compliance with generally accepted trade practices.
4. Record daily activities in the order tracking system (Archibus) using a tablet.
5. Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent and four years of commercial electrical work.
2. Solid working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
3. NC Electrical License or Journeyman card preferred.
4. NFPA 72 Electrical Safety Training preferred.
5. OSHA 30 Safety Training preferred.
6. First Aid and CPR training preferred.
7. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) required.
8. Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
9. Computer literate, knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
10. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
11. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
12. The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
A valid driver’s license. Operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position.
Positions may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes.
