We are looking for a Research Senior Technician to assist and support scientific investigation to study neurodegenerative disease glaucoma and other eye disease as directed in the Department of Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences; independently conducts assigned experiments; performs a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, assays, cell cultures and Northern and Western analysis; sorts and processes tissue and blood samples; tests and evaluates current procedures; performs routine procedures on lab animals; records, consolidates and assists with analysis of research results; assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts; prepares research progress reports; assists principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conducts library research on requested topics through researching current literature; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities; assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; sets up and operates laboratory equipment; monitors research supply, including specimens, inventory and initiates procurement requests as needed.

Additional Information:
Dr. Kizhatil studies glaucoma, a common ocular disease involving harmfully high intraocular pressure (IOP; pressure inside eye) and neural degeneration in the optic nerve and retina. His specific interest is to determine the molecules and mechanisms controlling normal intraocular pressure as well as mutations leading to the disease using a variety of techniques. This include molecular mechanisms controlling developmental and adult biology of structures controlling IOP including mechanism by which neural control of IOP is accomplished. In addition, new research will be initiated into finding resiliency factor to prevent neurodegeneration of the retinal ganglion cells. The Kizhatil lab will provide a rich environment for individuals to advance their scientific/research training. Dr. Kizhatil’s will ensure that individuals understand the context and implications of the research to apply and interpret theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct research in one or more scientific disciplines.
The range of duties includes but is not limited to: project planning and maintenance of critical mouse lines, design and performing experiments under supervision of senior lab members, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, willing to learn aspects of project management. Experimental approaches will include cell biological methods to study development and disease mechanisms, state of the art microscopy-confocal and electron microscopy, molecular biology techniques, cutting edge genomics including single cell sequencing, clinical assessment of eye phenotypes, and physiologic measurements.
The Kizhatil lab is looking for a curious, enthusiastic and diligent person looking to advance their training in science. Good organizational and communication skill are a requirement The incumbent will be expected to regularly develop and deliver presentations at lab meetings. This position is available immediately.
