Job Title:RAISE Initiative Assistant Associate Faculty – Biomedical Informatics
Department:Medicine | School Biomed Sci – Biomedical Informatics
The RAISE Initiative (Race, Inclusion, and Social Equity) of the Ohio State University (OSU) seeks to improve health equity through research contributing to an understanding and reduction of the impact of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) on vulnerable and disenfranchised communities. We are committed to recruiting, retaining, developing, and advancing a cadre of SDOH-focused faculty, providing robust mentoring, and embedding them in interdisciplinary teams committed to narrowing social disparities impacting health equity. Specific research to address the SDOH is imperative as these nonmedical vital signs impact health to a greater degree than medical interventions. Challenges to be addressed include our ability to identify SDOH systematically and proactively or create interventions that meet the needs and expectations of the community.
We are seeking applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor who is excited and committed to this call for action. Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in computer science, statistics, electrical and computer engineering, BMI, biomedical engineering or related discipline, with research interests in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) in digital health that explore and leverage SDoH, and/or address health equity. Faculty tenure-initiative-unit will be the Department of Biomedical Informatics, College of Medicine. The successful candidate will have a joint appointment with the Computer Science and Engineering Department, College of Engineering. As a national leader in evidence-based interventions and interprofessional team translational science, OSU has a responsibility to advance research and implementation science on the SDOH that are particularly harmful to historically marginalized and minoritized groups.
The research of the faculty appointment is expected to complement the strong basic, clinical and social science efforts of the following campus-wide centers (or institute): 1) Center for Cancer Health Equity in the Comprehensive Cancer Center; 2) Center for the Advancement of Team Science, Analytics, and Systems Thinking in Health Services and Implementation Science Research (CATALYST) in the College of Medicine; 3) Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Evaluation Studies (HOPES) in the College of Public Health; 4) Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI) and (5) CON Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care, Pitzer Center for Women, Children and Youth and Fuld Institute for Evidence-Based Practice.
The search committee is especially interested in candidates who can demonstrate (1) a record of high-quality research and scholarship, or for Assistant Professor candidates, demonstration of a solid research agenda and publication and external funding capability, (2) potential for high-quality teaching and mentoring of students from diverse backgrounds, and (3) a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. As part of OSU’s commitment to RAISE, we request candidates to describe in their research statement: (1) how current and future program of research demonstrates a focus on the SDOH and improving health equity; (2) and how their plans for developing interdisciplinary academic programming.
Applicants should upload a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research plans (limited to 3 pages), and a teaching statement. In the cover letter, please clearly specify which track, rank and research area you are applying for. In the teaching statement, please outline your approach to teaching and learning, as well as your goals and vision as an educator. Evaluation of applications is underway and will continue until positions are filled.
Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) – persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice.
