Job Title:Assistant Director – Investigational Drug Service

Scope of Position
Under the direction of the Associate Director -Cancer Pharmacy Services, this position leads and manages the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) for the pharmacy enterprise. The Investigational Drug service includes 2 IDS pharmacies, 19 employees, dispenses ~15,000 doses annually, manages ~650 open clinical trials across 25 treatment sites, and generates $5.6M in charges annually.
Position Summary
This position oversees the operations and services provided by the IDS. This position assists with the implementation and maintenance of an enterprise-wide pharmacy practice model, specifically contributing in the area of IDS. This pharmacy practice model is guided by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy Practice Act (OAC4729-5). This position is responsible for direct supervision of all IDS staff. This includes oversight of staff in the areas of productivity, quality, cost, IT, operations, medication safety, and continued compliance with all national, state and local regulations. This position supports The Ohio State University’s research and education missions.
Job Functions
Personnel Management (45% effort) – This position directly supervises the activities of the IDS staff. This position is responsible for using the Performance Excellence (P3) system for staff by developing SMART goals across job categories, in addition to individual goals that promote staff development, satisfaction, and engagement. This position has direct and administrative oversight of ~19 individuals. The position oversees recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of all IDS employees.
Compliance/Quality Improvement (20% effort) – This position ensures IDS staff (pharmacists, technicians, students, and residents) are compliant with pharmacy practice laws and guidelines developed by the Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, The Joint Commission, ASHP, GCP, and study-specific guidelines and requirements. This position ensures that competencies are developed and maintained by staff members in the areas applicable to their practice setting and position. This position also serves as a reviewer for medication safety events related to investigational products and has oversight of the IDS inspection policy for offsite research. This position will also participate/initiate quality improvement projects related to investigational products.
Outreach and collaboration (10% effort) – This position serves as a liaison between the Department of Pharmacy and the various trial management groups; including but not limited to, the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) and the Clinical Trials Management Office (CTMO). This position also participates in national committees such as the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC), National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) to create guidelines and best practices related to IDS. It is expected that this position publishes papers in peer-reviewed literature, presents scholarly work at regional or national meetings, assists where needed in resident and staff research projects, and participates in local and national professional organizations.
Financial management (10% effort) – This position is responsible for creating and operating within the budget for the IDS cost center.This includes maintenance of the productivity model for appropriate resource allocation. This position also assists with the creation and maintenance of a billing system, submitting timely charges, and collecting revenue that supports the services that the IDS team members provide.
Patient care (5% effort) – This position will be expected to provide patient care 1 day /month. Additional time may be required as needed for the successful operation of the pharmacy/department.
Department education, scholarship and research (5% effort) – This position assists with the strategic direction for the Pharmacy enterprise as it relates to the role of pharmacy in clinical trials research. This position requires an academic emphasis through participating in didactic classroom sessions in pharmacy practice and mentoring all levels of trainees. This position collaborates with the College of Pharmacy in enhancing the national reputation of the medical center pharmacy program through scholarship, education and research. Specific activities include (1) assigning IPPE/APPE or resident direct patient care rotations in the area ofIDS (2) Facilitating learning experiences for visiting scholars (3) contribution to the design and conduct of the Investigational Drugs and Research PGY1/2 Residency and IDS internship programs.
Individual professional development (5% effort) – This position is required to have an academic emphasis through participating in didactic classroom sessions in pharmacy practice and mentoring all levels of trainees. It is expected that this position publishes papers in peer-reviewed literature, presents scholarly work at regional or national meetings, assists where needed in resident and staff research projects, and participates in local and national professional organizations.
Organizational Expectations
This position is expected to comply with the Medical Center’s policies and procedures; particular attention is given to managing intradepartmental relations. This position also adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: This position must be a licensed pharmacist in good standing with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. A B.Sc. in Pharmacy, or Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) is required. An advanced administrative degree (M.S., MHA, MPH, MBA) is preferred. Post-graduate residency training is preferred. In addition, a significant track record in scholarship and teaching are preferred.
Ongoing: Performs professional, supervisory, and teaching functions outlined above. Continues to meet competency and licensure expectations of a staff pharmacist.

Produce clear, intelligible speech 100% of the time (i.e communication with hospital and pharmacy staff about medication orders)

Work Environment
The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. working around moving parts, carts, machines; working with sharps (i.e. needles, syringes, etc.), medications (i.e. chemotherapy, antibiotics, ionizing radiation, etc.), chemicals (i.e. laboratory and/or cleaning agents).
