The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. HJF is seeking a Data Manager II to assist with the research data handling requirements for a research study/protocol. This includes data collection tool design (e.g., surveys, clinical data forms), research database creation and maintenance, and scientific figure generation.

This position will be in support of Department of Military and Emergency Medicine (MEM) – Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP). CHAMP carries out and translates research to improve service member performance in the field and returning to duty. CHAMP aims to be DoD’s best resource for evidence-based information on human performance optimization (HPO) to improve the performance and resilience of our service members and their families.

Assists PI, Project Managers, and research team in development of materials and tools required for the seamless conduct of research, including coordination of database planning, data processing, and data management. Abides by appropriate maintenance of study records in accordance with all applicable regulations.
• Import, clean, and transform raw data with the purpose of preparing a dataset for storage in a database using R software (or similar software) and/or MS SQL.
• Participates in research project planning with respect to database needs; anticipates database structure to support project goals. Assists the Biostatistician and research team in deciding on database structures best suited for housing the types of data collected to align with planned and unplanned data analyses.
• Receives, organizes and securely stores electronic datasets and source document data files. Collaborates with researchers and biostatisticians in retrieving information and data sets from databases and other data sources, manipulating data, and providing research and management reports as requested.
• Interacts with members of a multi-disciplinary team to accomplish the data collection and quality needs of the Program. Serves as an active contributor to team discussions about study methodology and data management.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of databases and other software tools for database design, data upload and statistical data set creation for data analysis. Experience with relational databases preferred.
• Proficiency with applying basic statistical techniques and comprehension of statistical findings. Statistical and data analysis experience is preferred to assist gathering and solving data quality issues.
• Experience with data analysis tasks such as cleaning, visualization, and exploration
• Knowledge of statistical programming languages such as R, Python, or Stata and experience with data manipulation and analysis.
• Experience with REDCap and other survey collection software (e.g., Qualtrics).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and collaboration abilities to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience working with large-scale healthcare datasets, electronic health records (EHR), or similar medical research data, military medical research preferred.
• Understanding of field-based and clinical research paradigms, methods, and workflows.
• Ability to investigate data issues and participate in remediation activities
• Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and critical reasoning skills.

• Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

• This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
