Nursing Department Chair

THE POSITION AND QUALIFICATIONS. CPH seeks an ambitious nursing leader to serve as chair to guide the growth and development of Temple Nursing, including continuing to grow its graduate programs and enhance its undergraduate program, with a particular focus on developing practitioners who will serve the diverse clinical and community needs of the area. The chair of the Department of Nursing will develop a strategic plan to incorporate and grow its educational programs in tandem with its research mission.
The ideal candidate will have the clinical and administrative acumen to work within an urban health system caring for our most vulnerable populations and is dedicated to understanding and remediating health disparities. The successful candidate will indicate enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary environment and collaborating with faculty across the college’s eight academic units to continue to build a college responsive to the needs of 21st century healthcare and communities. The chair will sustain and enhance academic programs and clinical services in the Nursing Department and support its research and scholarly activity by working closely with faculty to develop research and increase the number of publications and externally funded grant support.
The chair will have the opportunity to strategically recruit and mentor early career and senior nurse educators and scholars. Opportunities for practice-based scholarship by nursing faculty are plentiful in Philadelphia, and CPH faculty have embraced interdisciplinary efforts to transcend traditional boundaries in clinical and population health. Available to all faculty are biostatisticians and methodologists located within the college’s public health programs and within its Biostatistics Core. Also available is a large and robust Office of Research Administration.
The chair will strategically plan for the department’s future, including an expansion of its graduate programs. The successful candidate will manage an annual budget and engage in entrepreneurial endeavors, including fundraising. This individual must possess vision and leadership skills. A record of fostering and enhancing nursing education programs and an understanding of clinical practice plans is sought, including evidence of professional leadership and administrative acumen
THE DEPARTMENT. The Department of Nursing has 19 full-time faculty with expertise in community and public health, maternal-child nursing, acute care, geriatrics, psychiatric/mental health, trauma-informed care, obesity, school nursing, health professional simulation and health informatics. In addition, the department typically engages 25-30 clinical adjunct faculty during the academic year. Reflecting the college’s public health mandate, the Department of Nursing prepares students for various roles in academic medical centers, community hospitals, community health settings, long-term care and primary care. Nursing faculty are committed to engaging students in evidence-based practice and research, providing bountiful opportunities in field settings, and supporting the needs of Philadelphia communities. Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, our academic programs include a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and a doctor of nursing practice (DNP). The chair works closely with the program directors for each of these two programs along with two additional administrative staff members to support the department’s academic mission.
THE COLLEGE. Devoted to an interprofessional environment for education, research, and practice, the CEPH-accredited College of Public Health consists of academic units in the public health disciplines, health professions, and the School of Social Work. The college’s research aims to understand the fundamental factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations by examining health problems through foundational research, policy and practice, and the development and dissemination of evidence-based interventions. We focus on social determinants of health and social justice with strengths in cancer, obesity, HIV, substance abuse, mental illness, mobility research, cognition and language, developmental disabilities, organ transplantation and aging. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, other major private foundations, and state and federal agencies. The college is home to an Office for Community Engaged Research and Practice, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, and the Collaborative on Community Inclusion. The Office of Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education leads our clinical activities, including the development of forward looking interprofessional education within the college and throughout the university. The college is staffed by a complement of seasoned professionals including offices of Admissions and Recruitment, Communications and Marketing, Information Technology, Sponsored Research, and Academic and Clinical Affairs.
