Visiting Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Writing Center Studies
Stetson University invites applicants for a full-time Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellowship in Writing Center Studies. We seek a Fellow to support the Director of the Stetson University Writing Center in developing and implementing innovative, embedded, sustainable systems that support the University Quality Enhancement Plan focused on information literacy and to support our ongoing work for student-centered excellence. While student support strategies for writing at Stetson currently feature proven approaches, including robust peer tutoring and faculty development programs, we are seeking candidates versed in new and innovative pedagogies connecting writing and information literacy.
The two-year position involves both teaching and administrative work. A 2/2 teaching load in the Department of English will include a newly redesigned Developmental Writing course and may, at the Department’s discretion, include Peer Tutoring in Writing and other courses in the Fellow’s specialty.
The Fellow’s work will be primarily in the Writing Center. Administrative work will include leading the Writing Center in tutor and faculty development programming around information literacy, supporting the Director in daily operations, and contributing to teaching and tutoring practices that focus on people, culture, and inclusive excellence.
THE STETSON UNIVERSITY WRITING CENTER
The Stetson Writing Center, housed in the Du-Pont Ball Library, is a popular peer-to-peer hub for student-centered success, including tutoring in writing, information literacy, and other critical literacies. Over 20 highly trained tutors from across the disciplines offer both in-person and online tutoring sessions. The Writing Center works closely with the duPont-Ball Library faculty and offers cross-disciplinary, student-facing workshops on a range of topics, many of which support the University Quality Enhancement Plan to enhance information literacy skill in first year and sophomore students. The Writing Center also works closely with international students and students from historically underserved communities.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Composition/Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or Writing Center Studies (or related field). Candidates who are ABD are invited to apply. Writing Center experience is required. Applicants should have an active scholarly record and experience working with diverse student writers, program directors, Library faculty, and faculty from across disciplines. Desirable additional qualifications include TESOL.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TEACHING LOAD
In keeping with the teacher-scholar model central to the mission of our liberal learning, this position involves teaching, research, and administration. The Fellow will teach up to four courses in the academic year, for a teaching load of 2/2, including courses in Developmental Writing and at the discretion of the English Department, and courses in the Fellow’s specialty.
Fellows are expected to participate in professional development programs through the Brown Center during their residency. PROGRAM:
The Brown Visiting Teacher-Scholar Fellows Program is the flagship program of the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, a central resource for promoting faculty vitality and vibrancy to advance learning at Stetson University. The Fellows Program prepares faculty leaders who inspire excellence in learning, teaching, research, and service; in turn, Fellows leave inspired to lead. During their residency, Fellows will develop in their role as a teacher-scholar through participation in professional development programs offered by the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence.
THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES:
Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (www.stetson.edu/artsci) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 35,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
