This position provides an advanced level of technical expertise and advanced level of research work in the areas of bacteriology and mycology, to assist in the research, development, validation, and implementation of laboratory diagnostic tests which could include, but are not limited to microorganism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and advanced molecular techniques. This position also exists to review research activities, correlate complex technical findings, interpret theories and reports and instruct lower-level employees in research procedures, as well as guide all levels of research applications, validation reports, and publication. Additionally, this position will assist in developing and monitoring quality indicators, quality control records, proficiency testing, and staff competency assessment. All positions within the MDH Public Health Lab will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.
A Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, medical laboratory science (or equivalent such as clinical laboratory science, medical technology) or a related science
AND
Three (3) years of professional laboratory experience (clinical or research), which includes experience in the design, validation, and implementation of molecular-based or culture-based microbiology assays for clinical diagnostic use.
Clinical and/or public health laboratory experience in specialty areas of bacteriology (including mycobacteriology), mycology; with antimicrobial and antifungal susceptibility testing experience.
Ability to perform examination of specimens using classic microbiology techniques to isolate, identify, and characterize pathogenic organisms.
Expertise in molecular biology methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and whole genome sequencing (WGS).
Skills to provide training to other laboratory employees or students.
Experience and understanding of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) or College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation, rules and regulations; including a strong understanding of proficiency testing and personnel competency assessment requirements.
Knowledge of quality assurance and quality management systems, including experience in performing and writing reports for verifications and validations.
Ability to evaluate laboratory practices and make constructive recommendations for the improvement of procedures, methods, facilities, and equipment.
Occasional transportation of packages up to 20 pounds.
