JOB PURPOSE:
We are seeking a research professional with excellent writing and research skills. The successful application will perform work to support research or develop public programs and policies requiring continuous exercising of independent initiative and judgment. In addition, provide guidance to less experienced colleagues.
This role will be supporting the Duignan Distinguished Visiting Fellowâs book project that identifies key lessons for crafting an effective U.S. foreign policy toward Africa. It analyzes key assumptions and principles over eight decades from the Franklin Roosevelt to Joe Biden administrations and offers an insider account of the policy process drawing on the experience of the George W. Bush administration. The project will trace the agenda setting processes and decision-making options that led to: 1) developing signature initiatives including the Presidents Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Millennium Challenge Account; 2) ending six civil and regional wars; and 3) creating lasting institutions for engagement, including the Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the U.S. Mission to the African Union (USAU). The challenges of transnational threats and state fragility will also be researched for this book.
CORE DUTIES*:
⢠Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.
⢠Assist with development, communication and design of research findings and African current affairs to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in generating awareness of the project.
⢠Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high-level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planning and coordinating experimental protocols.
⢠Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
⢠Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
⢠Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
⢠Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
⢠Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
⢠Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
⢠Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Master of Arts degree or higher in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $59,000-$92,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
