Job Summary:
The ideal science teacher will help develop and guide the academic and social-emotional growth of children, focusing on our Upper School students (grades 9-12).
Responsibilities will include:
· Developing the lesson plans for all assigned science classes, working with peers, the department head and head of school to ensure alignment with school goals and pedagogy. Ability to teach standard upper school (high school) science courses as well as electives as promoted by student, teacher interest.
· Partnering with other teachers and staff as needed.
· Attending all scheduled meetings and events, including but not limited to department meetings, faculty meetings, all-school and family or community events and others as determined by the head of school and your department head. Helping chaperone selected off-campus trips.
· Communicating regularly and effectively with parents, peers and leadership on school and student issues, progress, challenges, successes.
· Evaluating student performance, social development, behavior, health and intellectual growth, reporting on these periodically and as scheduled by your department head through school-defined systems and processes.
· Providing individualized focus and tutoring when required to help students achieve their goals.
· Planning and conducting parent-teacher conferences during designated periods and as otherwise needed.
· Ensuring that lesson plans and your teaching style reach all of your students, adapting your approach as needed to properly educate students of different needs, motivational requirements and academic progress.
· Establishing clear objectives for students and providing the tools and lessons to attain them.
· Having knowledge of student and faculty handbooks and other school policies, and enforcing within school guidelines.
· Having a clear understanding of our school mission and values, and using these as the foundation for all planning, education and activity.
· Other responsibilities and activities as directed by the Head of School and US Department Head.
General Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will:
· Hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in science or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. Advanced degree(s) are a plus.
· Have at least 3 years of middle or upper school classroom experience, ideally in an independent school is preferred. For the right candidate less experience will be considered.
· Be capable of designing lessons for US students and teaching these lessons, both independently and as part of integrated school projects (e.g. lesson that integrates science, math, technology).
· Have the ability to tailor an innovative, engaging educational approach to the particular needs of a class or student, delivering an education that effectively motivates every student to their potential and reflects our school’s mission and pedagogy.
· On and off campus, represent our school in a way that positively builds our brand image and motivates people to learn more about the school.
· Help develop and execute school events and programs as needed. Chaperone day and overnight field trips as scheduled.
· Comply with all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations regarding teaching school children.
· Welcome constructive performance reviews, working to implement ideas for improvement on an ongoing basis.
· Have unimpeachable ethics, honesty, respect for all and a deep desire to work on behalf of students and the people who serve them.
· Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required by school leadership.
Other Qualifications:
All prospective employees must agree to submit to a background check and other employee screening as required. A USA-valid and current drivers license and record in good standing is required.
