Description
San Diego State University School of Music and Dance seeks to hire a tenure-track for Music Education with a focus in choral music education at the rank of Assistant Professor for a Fall 2024 appointment.
Primary responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate choral methods and materials, instructing graduate coursework in music education, and conducting a choral ensemble. Other responsibilities will be commensurate with the candidate’s areas of expertise. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with Music Education, Vocal Arts, and Performance Ensemble faculty to deliver an undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
Additionally, the successful candidate will develop and maintain a national and international profile within the profession, develop and maintain contacts with regional teachers, school systems, and professional organizations, and keep up to date with pedagogical developments in the field.
Qualifications
Terminal degree in Music Education is required, ABD will be considered. The candidate will have demonstrated teaching experience in the K-12 setting and accomplishment as a music education scholar. Evidence of successful university instruction is desired.The candidate will need the ability to work and collaborate with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.

SDSU School of Music and Dance:
The SDSU Music Education program is the largest degree program within the SDSU School of Music & Dance and the only undergraduate degree in music education in a public institution in San Diego. There is 100% job placement for music education graduates who seek K-12 employment and a strong collaborative relationship between the SDSU faculty and the local community. SDSU music education majors are embedded in experiential learning and gain experience observing and working in K-12 settings as well as collaborative teaching environments in the university setting. The music education program is expanding with the development of a Master of Music Education (MM) degree to begin in the next academic year.
The School of Music and Dance (SM&D), which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music (B.A., B.M., M.A., M.M., Advanced Graduate Artist Diploma) and dance (B.A., B.F.A.). The School enrolls over 325 majors and serves thousands of students across our campus each academic year through its general education courses, performing ensembles, and public performances. To deliver our comprehensive curricula, the School has 21 permanent faculty (tenured or tenure-track), 38 lecturer faculty (mostly part-time), and approximately 13 studio instructors. The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $77,000 to $80,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
