Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is seeking to fill an Associate Research Physicist position (postdoc position) in its Theory Department to help lead the development and application of simulations of fast ions in NSTX(-U) discharges with concomitant radio-frequency and neutral beam injection heating. The candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists with diverse expertise working to advance the understanding of energetic particle physics and to develop new approaches to amplify the NSTX-U scientific program.
A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy — a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us!
Responsibilities
We seek energetic applicants who are eager to navigate among theory, computation, and modeling of experiments with applications to fusion energy. The successful candidate will lead the development, verification, and validation of reduced models for understanding the dynamics of energetic ions and the instabilities that these particles drive. The selected applicant will then integrate these models into frameworks of whole-device modeling, and will use analytical and computational tools and experimental data to propose new solutions to the energetic particle confinement problem to be tested in future experimental campaigns. The work will involve close interaction with members of the Theory Department as well as with the NSTX-U Research team.
It is required that the candidate has knowledge of plasma physics and has experience in code development and code validation. The position is for an initial two-year appointment with possible renewal for an additional year contingent on performance. Candidates should apply online and include a cover letter, resume, and contact emails of at least two, and preferably three, professional references. Questions can be directed to Vinícius Duarte – [email protected].
