About the Department:
Extension at NC State University partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land, and economy of North Carolinians. Our Family and Consumer Sciences program provides North Carolina families with research-based programs on nutrition, health, food safety, food preservation, and local food systems. We focus on food and nutrition programming, and our agents deliver evidence-based programming in nutrition, health, food safety, food preservation, and local foods.
North Carolina State University has received a five (5) year project from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent obesity in 10 counties in central and eastern NC (Warren, Hertford, Halifax, Northampton, Bertie, Washington, Lenoir, Jones, Columbus, and Robeson). A primary goal for this project is to engage and leverage community extension to implement evidence-based strategies for food and nutrition security, safe and accessible physical activity, family healthy weight programs, and early care and education settings.
Essential Job Duties:
To support these efforts, NC State University is hiring a position (1.0 FTE) Nutrition Access Community Liaison to help assess and implement obesity prevention efforts related to nutrition access and family-healthy weight programming in each of these counties. This position will be located in Raleigh but will interface with county and district Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers, as well as, other state and community-based agency/organization professionals and volunteers across NC.
The Nutrition Access Extension Assistant will assess the community’s needs; work side-by-side with county-level Extension staff to coordinate the implementation of new and existing policies, programs, and community coalitions in alignment with the stated goals of the project; and provide support to the state-level evaluation team. To better understand each county’s needs and to coordinate these efforts, the Liaison will first conduct assessments focused on need and equity. Based on each county’s level of readiness, the Liaison will then work to increase access to healthy foods and family healthy weight programming with an emphasis on coordinating and connecting community members with resources.
