The Science House (TSH) is the College of Sciences statewide K-12 STEM outreach unit. The Science House annually reaches more than 6,000 teachers and 200,000 students from across North Carolina through teacher professional development and student programs. TSH’s mission is to promote scientific literacy and engagement among K-12 students in North Carolina. The Science House achieves this by 1) educating and empowering K-12 STEM teachers to effectively integrate innovative STEM content, research, and technologies into their instruction; 2) motivating and preparing K-12 students, through innovative STEM programs, to study and work in STEM fields; and 3) assisting STEM faculty and researchers in integrating, designing, implementing, and evaluating cohesive outreach programs for teachers and students at the K-12 level.
Catalyst is a program for high school students with disabilities who are in the Occupational Course of Study Program or Regular Education Setting in High School, including Honors and AP Classes (not self-contained or needing a one-on-one assistant) but prefer small group individualized instruction with hands-on science experiences to learn about STEM.
Participants learn about STEM content, skills, and careers. They also find out about STEM programs at Wake Tech and NCSU. Areas of focus include Biotechnology, Coding, App Design, Wearable Devices, Energy, Engineering, Art, Natural Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry, Space, Soft Skills, and many other topics. Students receive paid STEM internships, field trips, and the development of workforce readiness skills.
