Laborer, Asphalt Division Job Description

Job Summary:

Performs work involving laboring and operating of various simple to complex construction tools and equipment involving the construction, repairing, cleaning and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, gutters driveways, parking lots, private and public streets and State and Federal highways. Performs traffic control duties; May operate truck and trailer to move equipment from one job site to another.

Essential Job Functions: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all employees)

Laborers in the asphalt paving division work with and on hot mix asphalt (HMA) with temperatures ranging as high as 350 degrees. The laborer is required to perform various manual duties that include using a shovel for HMA and/or crushed limestone rock, sledge hammer (10-15 pounds), mattock (pickax like tool) for breaking out/tearing out existing pavement , string trimmers, gas powered saws ( hand held and walk- behind), lute (long handled rake like hand tool with flat metal blade) used to push or shove asphalt to make level or contour as required, walk behind commercial 3-5 h.p. blowers, walk- behind gas powered tamper plates (which can be difficult to control), occasionally an air compressor driven jack hammer to break up sections of pavement. Additionally, the laborer is working around various sizes of mobile off road construction equipment, licensed construction equipment such as dump trucks and exposed to street and highway public traffic operating at various posted speed limits. May include other duties assigned by foreman/manager as related to road and bridge maintenance and construction.

Work location: Outside, typically ground level with seasonal temperature extremes.

Work Postures: Standing, bending, twisting, walking and stooping continuously throughout shift.

Physical Demands: Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds sporadically throughout shift. Exposed to dusty conditions as result of the construction process.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday; 8-14 hour days mostly with occasional Saturday; some nightshift work. No specified breaks, sometimes continuous work through shift, sometimes multiple breaks if material supply delayed or interrupted or equipment breakdowns.
