Position Summary
The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Research Office invites applications for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Research. Michigan State University conducts world-class research, which has been recognized by the American Association of Universities, since 1961. As a land-grant institution, MSU is committed to creating, applying, and disseminating knowledge to the people of Michigan, the United States, and the world. Therefore, research conducted by the MSU College of Human Medicine physicians, scientists, and mentored-students is essential for making discoveries, using proven results in practical environments, and sharing evidence-based results through peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations. Research informs and transforms both our teaching and clinical environments. The Research Office is the epicenter of strategy, support, and faculty development for research activity within the College’s Departments, Divisions and Dean’s Office.
Four pillar communities provide the college’s foundation for biomedical and public health research. Scientists at the Grand Rapids Research Center, located in the MSU Innovation Park, study women’s health conditions and diseases, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. Next door to the Grand Rapids Research Center, the college partnered with private corporations on the development of the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building and is recruiting several new computational, modeling, epidemiological, and public health faculty. East Lansing faculty both in basic science and clinical departments are involved in a variety of cutting-edge research including cancer biology, precision medicine, addressing health disparities, and integrating engineering principles into biomedicine. The college’s recently formed Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health in Flint has already been home to several NIH Center grants in community-based participatory public health research addressing addiction, suicide, and health disparities. It will be recruiting 15-18 additional faculty in coming years. In 2021, MSU entered an exciting new partnership with Henry Ford Health System. The HFH+MSU Health Sciences has already created infrastructure and new pathways for pioneering research creating new synergies for collaboration. Priorities for the HFH+MSU partnership include amplifying cancer research and care as well as embedding justice, diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the work we do together. Finally, as a community-based, inclusive medical school, the College of Human Medicine has the privilege of providing evidenced-based knowledge to campuses throughout the State.
Reporting to the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Research is responsible for executing the vision for research set forth by the college and university strategic plan; determines priorities for investment to grow the college’s research portfolio in partnership with the chairs; fosters a culture of research and scientific excellence; partners with units for faculty recruitment and retention and to ensure faculty have the resources they need to be successful; and leads the Research Office team. As the leader of the Research Office, the Senior Associate Dean resolves conflicts, manages compliance, and ensures integrity in action across the college’s research endeavors. The Senior Associate Dean supports researchers across all eight community campuses, both MSU employed and volunteer faculty. The Senior Associate Dean serves as the key contact for research related issues across the university including the Office of the Research and Innovation, the university and college budget offices, and other colleges. In addition, the senior associate dean will be the key college-level contact for all issues related to grant funding agencies including state and federal agencies and will work with university officials on all compliance issues, research misconduct issues, etc. The role is expected to partner with other associate deans (for research) and work with faculty affairs and development to provide faculty development programs focused on skills necessary to be successful and well-funded research faculty. Finally, the Senior Associate Dean is responsible for relationships with research partners, is a key collaborator for departments recruiting research faculty and supports the work of the college’s Advancement team.
