Position Purpose:
The Nursing Clinical/Lab Coordinator is responsible for negotiating and arranging clinical experience placements in multiple healthcare settings which meet the educational requirements for students in the prelicensure RN and PN programs. These settings include a variety of acute, long-term, and public health settings within the area. This work is completed in collaboration with the Nursing Faculty, Director of Nursing, HPHPE Facilities Coordinator, and Health Professions administrative staff. The person in this position serves as the first point of contact with clinical agency representatives, and directly persuades and negotiates with them to arrange students’ clinical experiences.

Contracted faculty members are professional educators with the primary responsibilities of providing instruction and academic student support services respectfully, equitably, and inclusively to a diverse, multicultural, and multilingual student population, and professional activities contributing to the college, in alignment with .

This position performs all of the duties of a full-time educator and college instructor including: instruction of college courses in multiple modalities as assigned, which may include both in-person and online environments; curriculum development and course design; outcomes assessment and program review; mentoring students; professional development; participation in discipline leadership, division and college business; and other professional duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
Specific Responsibilities of the Nursing Clinical/Lab Coordinator include:
Assessing, developing, overseeing and managing clinical placement processes within the Nursing Program. (35%)
  • Researching and recommending appropriate clinical agencies while understanding the accreditation and curricular needs of students. Negotiating with department faculty, facility education colleagues, and administrators to ensure quality clinical learning opportunities. Facilities include acute care, long term care, school districts, non-profits providing health care services, and public health providers.
  • Acting as a liaison for LCC Nursing for establishing and maintaining relationships at clinical agencies and negotiating within the health care system to acquire clinical placements. Relationships may be long-term requiring on-going development or short term to meet the clinical experience needs of a small number of students in one geographic area.
  • Preparing, updating, and maintaining contracts with multiple clinical partners.
    • Initiating and ensuring completion of contract renewals with facilities at the appropriate times.
    • Negotiating contractual agreements that meet both party’s needs, using appropriate LCC template and communicating changes required throughout the review and signature process.
    • Working with the appropriate personnel to establish new contracts as requested by the faculty.
  • Annually soliciting feedback from faculty to assess and evaluate the appropriateness of clinical placements and their ability to meet learning outcomes as well as soliciting feedback from students and clinical sites as part of this evaluation process.
  • Arranging meetings as needed with pre-licensure clinical agencies to discuss clinical placements. Participating with faculty as needed in meetings with clinical agencies to discuss student performance, faculty roles and expectations.
  • Attending other required meetings at clinical affiliation agencies and participates in the LCC Nursing Advisory Board as scheduled.
  • Submitting clinical placement requests through appropriate agency systems. Requires knowledge of multiple individual or corporate request systems, timelines, eligibility requirements, and clinical experience limitations and availability.
  • Communicating with agencies regarding specific plans for student placements (dates, student numbers, units available, etc.).
  • Working with the Director of Nursing to ensure clinical placements and nursing lab experiences meet the requirements of the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
Facilitating a smooth transition of students into clinical sites. (25%)
  • Establishing and implementing policies and procedures for clinical placement, coordinating and integrating within the Nursing Program.
  • Developing and implementing a retrievable database of clinical sites and preceptors, including preceptor and student qualifications.
  • Collaborating and effectively communicating with respective Nursing Faculty, Course Leads, other campus clinical coordinators, and outside clinical agencies.
  • Communicating with faculty and course coordinator the agency rules regarding student ID badges, electronic medical records (EMR) orientation, parking privileges, health and safety requirements, confidentiality, competencies, etc. As these differ among clinical agencies, directing accurate information specific to the placements of each student to appropriate clinical faculty.
  • Collaborating with Nursing Faculty to establish clinical orientation dates and clinical make-up dates, developing clinical groups, scheduling, and clearly communicating to students and clinical faculty dates for clinical orientation/clinical experiences/make-up dates for each student clinical group each semester.
  • Communicating with appropriate agency staff regarding the expectations of the students during the clinical experience at multiple clinical sites each term.
  • Assisting with student orientation to lab, multiple clinical agencies, and clinical processes.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of state, system, and agency requirements for clinical, and internship eligibility in Oregon.
Coordinating with Nursing Project Specialist for recording and maintaining clinical eligibility for students. (5%)
  • Coordinating with Nursing Project Specialist for managing, maintaining, and auditing clinical requirements including (but not limited to): Immunization status, CPR status, background studies, and drug screens.
  • Communicating with the Nursing Project Specialist, faculty, and students regarding clinical eligibility requirements including immunizations, background studies, RN licensure, or drug screening when applicable.
  • Communicating with faculty, students, and clinical agencies if clinical eligibility requirements are not met, and ensuring student re-establishes compliance as soon as possible. Ensuring compliance with eligibility requirements before placement in a clinical setting for each student each clinical course semester.
Coordinating with Nursing Faculty in the RN and PN programs on nursing lab experiences (35%)
  • Lead lab committee; writes meeting agendas, assigns committee roles and tasks.
  • Work with lab committee and nursing faculty on policies and procedures for the nursing lab.
  • Coordinate laboratory schedule for students and faculty.
  • Facilitate and monitor open lab as required by ACEN.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and works with HPHPE Facilities Coordinator to submit order requests.
  • Ensure safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials (e.g., biohazard, sharps containers).
  • Monitor and ensure appropriate standards for equipment maintenance and replace or replacement.
  • Train lab faculty (and students) on new equipment.
  • Consult with lab faculty on required lab set up, including equipment and supplies for student learning experiences.
  • Set up lab with needed equipment and supplies for student lab experiences.
  • Coordinate lab breakdown and clean up schedule.

This position works in varied environments.
