About This Role:
The Department of Communication and Media at Lamar University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Public Relations/Advertising to begin Fall 2023.
In this role, the hire would teach a variety of courses within the public relations and advertising concentration area. Courses may include Introduction to Public Relations, Advertising Principles and Practices, Public Relations Writing, Advertising Copywriting, Advanced Advertising, Persuasion, Public Relations Campaigns, Issues Management, Social Media Campaigns, and other courses relevant to the applicant’s specialty area and departmental needs. The hire will teach face-to-face courses and online courses.
Position Responsibilities:
The department is seeking a hire with the experience, research, teaching, and service that can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the Lamar University community and the Department of Communication and Media’s academic community. The hire will also engage in a focused program of academic and creative scholarship, be the co-advisor for AdFed and PRSSA, and serve on departmental, college, and university committees as needed. An active research agenda, ideally combining public relations or advertising with one or more of the following areas is required: social, mobile, digital media, storytelling, data insights and analytics, diversity, and/or the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies. The ideal candidate will participate in the development of online courses for graduate and undergraduate programs. The department is especially interested in candidates who can work collegially and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds. The Department is open to a variety of methodological approaches.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
Minimum Qualifications
A terminal degree in public relations, strategic communication, advertising, mass communication, or related discipline as well as experience in public relations and/or advertising are required by August 1, 2023. ABDs will be considered and are encouraged to apply. University-level teaching experience is required; graduate and/or online teaching is a plus. Women, veterans, and members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply, as are candidates with international and interdisciplinary experience.
The successful candidate should maintain a current understanding of changes and trends in the profession and effective pedagogical practices and have active involvement with one or more national or international professional associations (e.g., PRSA, IABC), an established record of teaching at the undergraduate level, 2 to 3 years work experience in the media industry, expertise in teaching a variety of communication courses such as strategic social media, communication management, mobile media, public relations/advertising ethics, diversity in PR/advertising, content creation, strategic writing, media history, critical/cultural theory, and qualitative or quantitative research methods, and a commitment to service learning.
