Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Art and Design
Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Studio Art at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 2024. The ideal candidate will be an artist and design educator with demonstrated expertise in the fields of design/technology such as: culturally sensitive design, human-centered design, design activism, and contemporary design issues and aesthetics. Emphasis will be on speculative design, the engagement of community, and learning experiences that expand the intellectual conversations in art and design, utilizing various modes of production, methods of presentation, and forms of dissemination.
Applicants should be practicing artists who are exhibiting their work nationally and/or internationally, and are committed to developing and maintaining an ongoing professional artistic career. They must hold a MFA degree and demonstrate strong teaching skills, with teaching experience at the college level expected. Ability to communicate the relevance of art and design in all areas of society and within a liberal arts environment is an essential part of this position. Courses will incorporate a variety of design and multimedia techniques and theories, and include challenging conceptual content that responds to and creates new frameworks for current visual culture and a socially-engaged awareness in such fields of inquiry as artificial intelligence, globalization, sustainability, wellness, and complex and intersecting gender, racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and political identities.
The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of processes, including but not limited to design practices, interactive and technology-driven experiences, typography, illustration, design research, and design history. The Studio Art Department supports assignments that utilize interdisciplinary strategies. Knowledge of design technologies and software is essential, including Adobe Suite, Unity, Arduino, and CAD, as well as knowledge of art history and contemporary art. They will contribute to the curriculum which offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses as well as individual project development, critical thinking, and experimentation.
Responsibilities include teaching five courses per year on all levels including one cross-media advanced seminar. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the studio and equipment and purchasing supplies. Faculty Development support is available to assist with pedagogical and artistic projects. In addition to teaching, advising and mentoring, full-time faculty participate in the Kenyon community through ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, and collegiate service and governance.
