A few must-haves for this position:

• High school diploma or equivalent, and
• Medical records management experience of 2-4 years and completion of a hospital/facility in-house training program; or
• Successful completion of an Independent Study Program in Health Information Technology offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) achieving certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or the American Academy of Professional Coders Certification (CPC) or as required by the contracting facility.
• Familiar with state and federal regulations and Medicare reimbursement.
• Proficient in the use of electronic medical records (EMR) systems.

Here’s a big-picture view of what you’ll do:

• Review and evaluate clinical documentation within the medical record.
• Interpret medical information, such as disease, symptom, or diagnostic descriptions to assign correct ICD-10 diagnosis codes.
• Ensure ICD-10 codes are accurately assigned and sequenced to align with accepted coding conventions, legal standards, and billing guidelines.
• Queries physicians and requests/obtains supporting documentation, records, and clinical notes, as needed.
• Complete timely and accurate entry of diagnosis codes into the patient record to support timely and accurate billing of claims.
