Hofstra University, a nationally ranked and recognized private university in Hempstead, New York,
invites nominations and applications for the role of Dean of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library (main university library).
Hofstra
enrolls over 6,000 undergraduate students and nearly 4,000 graduate and professional students in 13 schools, which feature a variety of departments, as well as a number of institutes and centers. Hofstra offers 180 undergraduate
programs and approximately 190 graduate programs in Liberal Arts and
Sciences, Business, Communication, Education, Health Professions and Human Services, Engineering and Applied Science, and Honors studies, as well as a School of Law and a School of
Medicine. The student-faculty ratio is 13 to 1 and average undergraduate class size is 21. Athletics contribute to the vibrance
of the Hofstra community, with 21 varsity sports teams that compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Colonial Athletic
Association.
Hofstra recently entered a new era with the appointment of its ninth and first female president, Dr. Susan Poser, in
August 2021, as well as a new provost, Dr. Charlie Riordan, in July 2022. This new leadership is investing heavily in academic programs for
students while also growing the scholarly and research enterprise and reputation of the University. Hofstra is expected to be officially
recognized as a Carnegie R2 university within the next 18 months. Significant investments are being made in student-centered facilities,
including the library and athletics, and implementation of a new strategic direction for the university has recently
commenced.

Description
The new dean will
serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, with overall responsibility for collection
development and management; library services; budget and planning; application of emerging information technologies; personnel; fundraising
and building partnerships with campus and community leaders. The dean will recruit, mentor, and retain an excellent team of faculty, staff
and student employees while building upon the university’s priorities of diversity, equity, and inclusion as hallmarks of
excellence.
The Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, the main university library, houses the circulating book and the journal
collections, the Harold E. Yuker Reference Library, Curriculum Materials Collection, Film & Media Collection, and the John W. Wydler
Government Documents Depository. It contains over 600,000 print volumes and provides 24/7 online access to more than 220,000 full-text
journals, approximately 800,000 electronic books, and nearly 300 databases. The library is also home to the Special Collections division
which is comprised of: The Rare Books and Manuscripts collections, University Archives, and the Long Island Studies Institute. The Hofstra
University Law Library and Health Sciences Library report to the Deans of Law and Medicine,
respectively.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a record of demonstrated leadership in an
academic library, with increasing responsibilities. A distinguished record of librarianship, scholarly achievement, and professional
accomplishments commensurate with an appointment of Faculty Librarian is required.
