Other Information
Time Commitment
The time assigned to perform the basic duties of an Education Director is determined by the Department Chair in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs, and is typically between 0.3 and 0.4 FTE (full-time equivalent). The actual time commitment required of an Education Director is based on various factors such as whether the Education Director is administering a second clerkship, participating in other college/departmental/regional campus assignments or was recruited based on completing specific expertise/expected outcomes and projects.
Reporting Relationship
The Education Director reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs for all matters pertaining to their role as Education Director. The Education Director reports to the Department Chair for other departmental functions. It should be noted that some education directors also serve as clerkship directors, and report to the Regional Campus Dean in that capacity.
Evaluation
The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs will evaluate the performance of each Education Director based on the Education Director assignment for the prior calendar year. The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs will provide a written evaluation to the Department Chair each April to be used in the annual evaluation for education directors who are full-time in faculty lines.
Helpful
The Education Director is an individual with substantial clinical teaching and medical education experience in the community-based model, serving the FSU College of Medicine (COM) as an educational authority for his/her specialty throughout the four years of the curriculum. In collaboration with the Clerkship Director at each regional campus, the Education Director will design and/or oversee the discipline-specific clerkship program at each of the COM’s regional campus and rural program sites.
The COM maintains a statewide network of part-time clinical faculty members who provide each student with a one-on-one clinical experience. Each regional campus and rural program site provides a diverse group of faculty practices where students complete their clerkships. The Education Director will employ strategies to evaluate clerkship quality, and will establish mechanisms to monitor and assure comparable learning experiences for each student at all clinical sites. To assist students in obtaining the best possible residency match, the Education Director will work with the campus deans and the Office of Student Affairs to provide access to mechanisms within his/her specialty for the advisement of students across all four years.
The Education Director position may be established as part of a full-time faculty position at the central campus or as a part-time position at one of the COM’s regional campuses. The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs works collaboratively with the respective Department Chair and/or Regional Campus Dean to appoint the Education Director.
