Summary The Manager, Utility & Technical Training manages the training programs for new Electrical Distribution Technology candidates by guiding the training process, assigning trainers, monitoring and assessing performance results, and facilitating final selections.
Job Responsibilities
Utility & Technical Training Leadership
* Develops and implements technical training strategies, policies and programs, which support the Company’s field workforce.
* Manages critical apprenticeship training programs for electrical operations personnel including state registration and Joint Apprenticeship Training Council.
* Provides leadership to the Utility Technical Training staff by recruiting, developing, and coaching direct and indirect staff.
* Develops, documents, and monitors the department budget. Develops mitigation plans as required to ensure departmental budget variances are managed and the approved budget is met.
* Tracks and reports data to management to ensure employees have the required training and are preparedness to execute their assigned job responsibilities effectively, efficiently, and safely.
* Develops and maintains current training curricula and supports technology (such as Learning Management Systems, content development software, and other solutions) and advancements in field work practices.
* Manages the company training facilities and ensures equipment and materials are suitable for effective learning.
Outreach and Relationships
* Maintains strong relationship and mutual support with Talent Acquisition on outreach and recruiting efforts, candidate evaluation, and selection.
* Acts as the Company’s primary resource and subject matter expert on utility and technical training programs. .
* Represent the Company in the community at recruiting events and outreach programs in coordination with Talent Acquisition.
* Maintains relationships with external partners within the training and higher education community.
General Expectations
* Maintains expertise through research, participation in trade/technical organizations, developing contacts/relationships with other technical training providers, and ongoing personal/professional development.
* Other duties as required.
Education/Experience Required:
* Bachelor’s degree in Business, Education, Engineering, EHS, Human Resources, or related field.
* Seven (7) or more years relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Established and ongoing relationships with technical training, utility focus groups, and workforce development organizations, as well as partners and potential partners.
* Higher level education such as a Master’s degree, or applicable professional certification is desired.
* Electric utility experience including Transmission & Distribution, construction, and/or substation experience preferred.
* Three to five (3-5) years of prior people management experience is desired.
Skills and Abilities Contributing to Success in this Role Include
* Knowledge and experience in planning and execution of technical training and workforce development programs.
* Experience with administering and supporting LMS.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Ability to effectively manage people and programs.
* Experience managing and leading people is required.
Scope
Primary focus is on day to day management of operational execution, application of learning strategy, and developing roadmaps to reach intended outcomes. Develops and exercises business plans, policies, and procedures. Contributes to proactive planning exercises of management team as requested. Trains and develops staff. Plans the work flow. Looks for areas of process improvement and directs available resources to accomplish this. Leads changes and implementations for direct team as pushed down through the organization.
Decision Impact
Resolves problems of a greater complexity than the Supervisors and Individual Contributors. Improves existing processes & systems using conceptualizing, reasoning, & interpretation skills. Solutions require through understanding of business strategies and issues. Defines broad based solutions that would require consideration of wider implications on organization results & resources.
