SUMMARY
The Executive Director, Alliance Management will play a strong role in the growth and evolution of our global alliance management capability. This role will be critical to preserving and enhancing the intended value of Daiichi-Sankyo’s strategic alliances through their experience in management of alliances across the life-science innovation spectrum, including late-stage development and commercial alliances both in cancer and non-cancer areas. The incumbent will be well-versed in the business of pharmaceuticals and will possess a deep knowledge of the critical role and value of alliances to the business of global biopharmaceutical companies. The candidate will develop and oversee the implementation of strategies for problem-solving and conflict resolution integrating the needs of global functions such as Global R&D. As such, this role requires a broad business understanding in the areas of drug development (i.e., personalized medicine; clinical; regulatory; translational medicine; CMC; etc.), drug commercialization, finance, supply chain, business development, etc.).Reporting to the VP and Head of Alliance Management, the Executive Director, Alliance Management will work to maximize the effectiveness and realize the full value of Daiichi-Sankyo’s partnerships by leading and managing a team of 1-2 alliance managers; proactively collaborating with other parts of the business development organization to shape, launch and manage high-priority alliances; identifying critical areas for improvement (processes, tools, skills) across all alliances and introduce best practices, including training, as required; (identifying and remedying critical areas of risk in key alliances by partnering with internal stakeholders including R&D, legal and business development transactions; and supporting and optimizing internal communication about alliance activities and performance; acting as a key advisor to senior management regarding matters pertaining to alliance partners.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
– Lead and manage: a team of 1-2 associate director/director-level alliance managers by focusing on the development of each individual and helping team members grow and develop.
– Governance Relationship management: Develop adequate governance processes for multiple types of alliances depending on therapeutic areas, geographies, business models (e.g., co-development/co-promotion) and deploy relationship management and pro-active conflict identification and resolution strategies that influence the long-term health of our alliances.
– Portfolio management: Strengthen processes for portfolio management and planning, launching and -managing alliances through methods such as tiering and prioritizing resource allocation. Identify gaps and creatively direct efforts to remedy gaps. Develop communication and training tools for lower priority collaborations that are not directly managed by alliance management.
– Risk management: Establish mechanisms for risk management in on-going alliances by organizing deep dives, planning and collaborative work with project managers and project-team members.
– Negotiations and transactions support: Pro-actively work with teams in place to support establishment of alliances as directed (e.g., support due diligence, provide input and suggestions to the business-development transactions team on the alliance-related provisions of contemplated partnerships, and launch preparation activities).
– Process improvement: Proactively engage with alliance management team members to assess and improve processes and tools; develop communication tools to report on alliance performance; enable after action reviews for continuous improvement. Support and as needed, lead global initiatives to harmonize alliance management across Daiichi-Sankyo locations and functions through surveys, stakeholder interviews and alignment of skills and capabilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will be able to meet the qualifications below with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Education Qualifications (from an accredited college or university)
– An MBA required
– A doctorate level degree either MD or PhD preferred
Experience Qualifications
– 12 or more years of professional experience with at least 12 years of relevant industry experience & minimum of 6 years of hands-on alliance management experience required
– 4 or more years experience leading multiple complex alliances and including hands-on experience leading and managing late-stage clinical-development and commercial alliances is required.
– A minimum of at least 3+ years of direct people management experience with a successful track record of leading, managing and developing a team of professionals required.
– Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing robust and scalable internal processes is required.
