PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Crispus Attucks Youth Build Charter School’s (CAYBCS) Mission is to provide a challenging and high quality academic education for the students who have qualified for a high school diploma. The program includes an academic component designed to offer Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Tech Ed/Construction, Career Development, and Special Education to meet the needs of individual students and enable to students to qualify for a high school diploma. The program’s service component centers on developing construction skills by reconstructing abandoned buildings. Finally, a placement program provides each student with pathways to higher education, additional technical training, apprenticeship, full time employment, or a career in the armed services.

PURPOSE:

The Classroom Teacher will prepare and present lessons according to the curriculum that is assigned with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. The strategies and techniques used will be designed to accommodate the needs of diverse learners and be planned with each individual’s needs, learning styles and ability as the primary focus of instruction. Small students/teacher ratios will be maintained to enable close interaction between students and teachers.

DUTIES:

• Become familiar with the Academic Standards and understand the ways in which the other Standards correlate with what you teach
• Adapt curriculum and develop additional materials according to the needs of the program students
• Modify curriculum and/or materials in conjunction with other staff to meet individual needs of students
• Utilize technology within your course study
• Participate in special projects as required
• Implement attendance, discipline and lateness policies and procedures consistently
• Work in conjunction with the ESL teacher to accommodate ELL students
• Implement cultural diversity into YouthBuild curriculum
• Complete daily lesson plans as required
• Complete daily assessment of student’s classroom performance
• Work together as a member of the School Staff

QUALIFICATIONS:

• PA Certification in assigned area
• Experience in working with young adults
• Experience in creative curriculum planning and development
• Deep respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults
• Strong commitments to helping young people succeed in an innovative education program, to reorient their lives, to nurture their leadership skills and to enable them to make a difference in their community
• Ability to relate sensitively to multi-racial and multi-cultural group of young people
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to team-teach and work as part of a team

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Frequent walking and standing
• Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and grasping
• Lifting up to 10-15 pounds

This position has recurring access to vulnerable populations. Please note: Vulnerable populations include service recipients age 17 and younger and/or persons age 60 and older. Recurring access means having access more than once.

SALARY RANGE:

Based on budget for the school year

Must pass required PA State Police Criminal History Clearance, PA Child Abuse History Certification, FBI fingerprinting and current NSOR certification.
