Housing and Dining Services
Housing & Dining Services (HDS) is a multifaceted auxiliary organization responsible for management of on-campus housing facilities, residential dining, conferences, and the CSU Mountain Campus. Other areas within HDS include the RamCard office, Communications & Sustainability, HDS Facilities, Human Resources, Technology Services, Workplace Education, and Business Services.
Mountain Campus
Nestled in a beautiful, secluded mountain valley at an elevation of 9,000 ft. (2,743 m) lies Colorado State University’s 1,600-acre Mountain Campus. Established in 1914, the Mountain Campus serves as a destination campus for research and education, local, national, and international conferences. Programs and activities at the Mountain Campus shape and inspire current and future leaders’ lives through learning and immersion experiences in the Rocky Mountains, and facilitate research addressing critical issues in ecology, environmental science, and natural resources.
The Mountain Campus operates from mid-May to mid-October each year, and is located 53 miles west of Fort Collins, approximately a 2-hour drive, the last 16 miles of which are on a gravel road. The campus is adjacent to the northern border of Rocky Mountain National Park and shares boundaries with Roosevelt National Forest. Abundant opportunities exist for hiking and backpacking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and fishing.
There is no cell phone service or TV reception and internet access is limited. Basic first aid is provided by the campus nurse, but definitive medical care (hospital/ER) is located in Fort Collins. Room and board is included for all staff during operations. The Mountain Campus is managed by the Department of Housing & Dining Services, and includes six career staff and 30 student and nonstudent seasonal staff and interns.

The Mountain Campus exists to serve the Colorado State University community and the surrounding region for academic field studies, educationally focused conferences and mountain research. Hiring will be based upon experience in related work situations, living experiences, and personal interest. We believe strongly in the “team” concept and the ability of applicants to work and live well with others in our remote setting. Individuals will be selected for an interview through a screening process. Job offers will be made in the spring for summer employment and Mid-July for fall employment. The Mountain Campus is hiring to fill about 30 collaborative positions to accomplish many tasks: dining service, custodial work, light maintenance, administrative support, challenge course facilitation, and more. All training is provided, but experience in any of these areas is preferred. Challenge Course Coordinator Position Summary:
The Challenge Course Coordinator is responsible for daily operations of the Mountain Campus challenge ropes course, which includes five in-line high elements, five low elements dispersed in the forested area at the ropes course site, two equipment sheds, an outhouse, and two small structures for gathering groups.
The position serves as a co-trainer and mentor for seasonal staff who will facilitate groups on the ropes course, and collaborates with Conference Coordinator, Assistant Director, and Director to develop and adjust weekly schedules and deliver appropriate services. The position carries out communications necessary for soliciting new group bookings, planning for group needs, and scheduling, mentoring, co-evaluating, and coaching the facilitator staff to meet the demands on the course.
The Challenge Course Coordinator must model risk management to assure safety, sanitation, and accident prevention for daily operations. This position ensures quality service is delivered and maintains equipment and structures. The position is responsible for modeling a culture of safety at the ropes course, and for addressing low-level training and accountability needs. This position is not responsible for supervision of facilitator staff and is not solely responsible for evaluation or accountability – these will be led and overseen by the Assistant Director and Director.
