Physical Requirements: The work is predominantly sedentary with extended periods of sitting while operating a computer. The work also involves the ability to bend, squat, reach, lift and carry light files, office supplies and medical records.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: Must have at least (1) one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully. Specialized experience includes: Working with computer programs including Microsoft Word, database programs and office equipment; Using proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, format, medical terminology and clerical procedures in order to accurately type and proofread written materials; Working with filing systems, office operations, reference and manuals; Performing routine administrative/clerical work.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed a full 4-year course of study, above the high school level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond the second year of undergraduate level coursework. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
Typing Proficiency: Must be able to type at least 40 words to minute.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee’s credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
