The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) announces a new position within our Substance Use Prevention Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This role will provide outreach and training throughout the State of Illinois to Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth in grades 6-12 on Substance Use Prevention strategies. Responsibilities include developing presentations, creating reports and tracking data, and representing MOPD at community outreach events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
* Develops training materials and facilitates presentations on Substance Use Prevention strategies for the Deaf and hard of hearing youth in grades 6-12 through the State of Illinois.
* Proactively conducts outreach to Deaf and hard of hearing programs in Illinois, to identify opportunities to present on Substance Use prevention strategies
* Prepares handouts to use in training and outreach and to share with the Deaf and hard of hearing community/disability community
* Maintains records and prepares reports of community outreach and training/presentation activities
* Conducts research on topics related to Substance Use Prevention for the Deaf and hard of hearing population as well as other disability related topics.
* Promotes MOPD programs and services on social media and newsletter communications.
* Attends community meetings, resource fairs, expos, and events to inform residents of MOPD services, discuss community concerns, and receive requests for City services and programs identified as a need by the disability community.
* Assists in coordinating MOPD community meetings and events

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences (e.g. social work, psychology, public health, education or special education, or similar field) plus two (2) years of community of community or social service experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience:
* At least 6 years of experience in community or social service work
* An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college, PLUS at least 4 years of experience in community or social service work
* A Master’s degree or Doctorate from an accredited college or university, PLUS at least 1 year of experience in community or social service work

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
* A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS
Preferences (but not required):
* Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL)
* 2 years professional or lived experience with people with disabilities including Deaf and Hard of Hearing; curriculum development, education, training, and program evaluation; working with youth
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Knowledge
Some knowledge of or familiarity with:
* The American with Disabilities Act and related legislation

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The candidate that possesses the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral interview, will be selected.

* OR Active military personnel must attach a letter from their Commanding Officer on official stationery verifying a minimum of 180 days Active Duty, length of service, and must include character of the service status in the Armed Forces of the United States. Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
