Engineer IV

The Systems Engineer IV or V leads research projects and works closely and collaboratively with ASU Principal
Investigator(s), research teams, and other stakeholders to plan, direct, organize, and execute against project requirements; identifies and
acquires necessary resources and coordinates efforts by all parties to ensure timely delivery of project outcomes in accordance with
sponsoring source’s expectations
What you’ll do:
Leads, manages, coaches, and supervises all
project team members both internal and contracted to perform innovative research; ensures optimal outcomes; builds, develops, and maintains
relationships vital to project success. Develops revolutionary technologies and leads transition of ASU research to operational systems.
Works collaboratively with the team to engage leadership, associated scientists and other research related staff to define and
identify all required project infrastructure including, but not limited to: space, build/reconfiguration of laboratory facilities,
equipment, technology and instrumentation to ensure timely availability for successful launch and ongoing project operations
Heavy participation in strategic decisions regarding research concepts/direction, expertise development (grow or buy) and future
direction of project efforts integrated with long term institutional objectives/goals
Fosters cooperative matrix
work-teams by developing mutually beneficial relationships identifying issues, concerns, and interests
Leads initiatives
to develop solutions and processes to meet needs; applies knowledge of strategic planning, forecasting and critical thinking
Plans, develops, implements, and manages a project team through complete task definitions and work requirement identification and
assignments
Works closely and collaboratively with key stakeholders to define project scope, strategy, budget, and
outcomes; identifies critical resource expertise and targets appropriate internal and/or external sources to ensure optimal outcome(s)
Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with team; assigns tasks and identifies issues for
resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness
Develops, prepares, maintains, and forecasts multiple complex project
level budgets
Plans, manages, and delivers on technical aspects of projects
Works closely with team
members to ensure systems engineering principles are followed and engineering tasks are completed to specifications that allow integration
of work into a large whole
Performs original scientific work and applied research leading to presentations, publications,
and patents
May complete prototyping and/or testing of prototypes
Sets metrics and targets to measure
successful completion of engineering work and ensures metrics are met by project team
Identifies needs for training and
education affiliated to project types
Curates training needs according to training standards and certifications. Outline
training content to be developed
Develops training content, and training evaluation methods
Conducts
training and evaluations
Responsible for identifying new funding opportunities, curating a network of potential funders
and collaborators, and leading proposals to receive new funding
Funding opportunities could be grants, contracts, gifts,
or other, and be actively sought from government, non-government, and other organizations
Prepares and maintains all
project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths, and dependencies; re-sets expectations as needed in
consideration of project progress/outcomes
Responds to all inquiries regarding project status; prepares and responds to
all regulatory reporting/filings to ensure compliance
Prepares all post-project reports, budget allocations and
summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information to all interested parties
What you’ll
need:
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
Must be a US Citizen.

Demonstrates strong ability to engage at senior leadership levels internally
in complex matrixed relationships involving both internal and external stakeholders in partnerships
Strong knowledge of
all applications, structures, and procedures; usage, capabilities, and applicability to meet and/or anticipate needs
Strong knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods, and techniques of process/quality improvement. Extensive knowledge of
project management principles, practices, and techniques needed for large, multiple complex projects
Strong knowledge of
the Laboratory for Energy And Power Solutions (LEAPS) in terms of capabilities and product/services offerings
Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment
Ability to maintain
a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to ASURE business and confidential information
Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
Problem solver who can manage multiple concurrent projects, proposals, and RFIs, take initiative and set priorities while being
flexible
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to accomplish program
goals despite obstacles, ambiguity, changing requirements, and a fast-paced environment
Ability to work toward a
high-level vision, but understand the importance of details and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
Highly
organized and able to handle multiple projects
Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and
communication plans
Technical leadership in systems engineering with broad technical competence to other fields
Ability to perform education for K-12 and university students, and ability to perform workforce development to existing working
professionals
Demonstrate ability to identify funding opportunities, curate teams and ideas, apply, and obtain funding
Relevant qualifications:
PhD degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry,
Operations Research (to include Statistics and Systems Analysis), Computer Science and/or Computer (Data) Systems. Will consider BS/MS
candidates with a demonstrated track record of original research.
Experience in project management
5-8
yrs experience leading technical projects required. Experience creating original technical research and publishing research
Experience in briefings to customers, leading proposals and projects
