Job Summary:
Student tutors assist and coach other assigned students in becoming a more successful and independent learner. Student tutors provide and help to integrate effective learning and study strategies for their assigned students, while at the same time helping to clarify and/or reinforce course content, assignments and material.
Math Center student tutors assist Math Center coordinator and Mathematical faculty in tutoring students to learn foundational Math courses, such as College Algebra, Calculus and other courses. Student tutors also provide and help to maintain Math Center’s operations, record students’ attendance, write reports, maintain computer hardware and software in the center, as well as send students report to instructors.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
• Have knowledge in College Algebra and Calculus I and II with pass grades B or above is preferred and/or department has test before hiring.
Essential Job Functions :
• Tutor specific academic subjects to individuals or small groups
• Monitor students’ attendance and progress
• Document and communicate student progress
• Refer students to supervisor:
o When they are continually absent
o When unsatisfactory progress is noted in sessions
o If additional difficulties are encountered in the tutoring sessions
o If tutor suspects student requires additional University resources
• Support and encourage independent learning by applying training and following expected procedures
• Coordinate meetings and schedules with tutees as appropriate
• Serve as a resource or other tutors in same academic subject
• Complete data entry tasks using required database software
• Participate in initial training program for developing teaching techniques and learning skills and on-going training sessions as required
• Attend staff meetings
Qualifications:
• Enrolled in either a graduate or undergraduate degree program (minimum 6 credits for undergraduate students, 9 credits for graduate students)
• Good academic standing (minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA is preferred) and demonstrated success in the course to be tutored
• Good conduct standing
• Successful completion of online student employee application
