Essential Functions
The role of the Academic
Advisor 1 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences Office of Academic Advising and
Field Experience is to provide students guidance to achieve a meaningful educational experience and develop professional and personal
goals. The Academic Advisor position works primarily advising UNO students and supports and assists the department and peer
advisors on project responsibilities.

Duties
Academic Advising: Manages an assigned caseload or serves as primary advisor for unit, including
personalized guidance from admission through graduation. Assists with course recommendations and developing academic plans of study that
aligns with the students’ goals. Completes necessary forms and write recommendation/support letters for students.
Transfer
and Credit Evaluation: Evaluate official and unofficial academic credit for transfer to UNO. Employ independent judgement to the
application of transfer credit in order to minimize time to degree completion and overall cost while maintaining the integrity of the degree
requirements.
Retention and Persistence: Providing proactive, comprehensive, and exceptional service in monitoring
re-enrollment and student progress to enrollment. Foster student success, persistence and engagement while support students in their
academic journey, incorporating best practices in academic advising.
Student Support, Coaching and Referral:
Support and coach students in academic difficulty, probation, and other concerns. Refer when appropriate.
New Student
Onboarding: Orient and welcome newly admitted UNO students and introduce/teach key institutional processes and technologies.
Recruiting Activities: Offer prospective students personalized guidance through recruiting events, meetings, and
transcript evaluation. Promote the value of a 4-year degree and the UNO general education curriculum.
Strategic Planning and
Oversight: Engage in unit/college/campus-wide strategic planning and initiatives. Contribute to continuous improvement and
innovation of advising. Seek ongoing professional development and maintain cohesive work connections.
University and
Professional Involvement: Participate in university committees, programs, and events. Explore further development through active
engagement in NACADA and student population or academic program specific associations.
