Description
The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Instructor. The School seeks to establish a pool of qualified applicants to teach performance studies courses at the undergraduate level, oversee The Empty Space Theater, and fulfill the Interpreter’s Theater directive from the Provost office.
The successful candidate will be expected to support student and faculty driven creative projects in the Hugh Downs School and collaborate with other units in The College and ASU that contribute to The Empty Space Theater.
Instructor positions are fixed-term appointments with no tenure implications. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. Specific start date will be the 2024-25 Academic Year.

The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication offers BA, BS, MA, and Ph.D. degrees. The School is composed of approximately 24 distinguished interdisciplinary faculty recognized for teaching and research excellence in areas of Human Communication including: health communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance studies, critical/cultural studies, and rhetoric. The School’s mission aims to produce transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching that respond to pressing issues in the world today. Minimum Qualifications
· Master’s degree in Human Communication or performance studies related area.
· Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in performance studies courses at the college or university level.
· Familiarity with the flow of theatrical event planning (e.g., proposals, publicity, production).
● Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter
· By policy, the successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by time of hire.
Desired Qualifications
· Ph.D. in Human Communication or performance studies related area.
· Supervision experience of student and/or faculty performance-based projects.
· Demonstrated knowledge of theatrical equipment (lightboards, soundboards, and digital recording).
· Familiarity with coordinating artistic and theatrical operational budgets.
· Demonstrated capacity to contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality undergraduate curriculum in performance studies.
· Demonstrated capacity to contribute to the School’s Civil Dialogue program and related certificate.
