The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (https://thcas.ecu.edu/) is home to sixteen academic departments, several interdisciplinary research centers, and a number of inter- and multi-disciplinary programs (https://thcas.ecu.edu/undergraduate-programs/) including Ethnic Studies, International Studies, Religious Studies and African and African American Studies (AAAS). The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (https://foreign.ecu.edu/) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures with eight concentration areas: French, French Education, German, German Education, Hispanic Studies, Hispanic Studies Education, Global Studies and Classical Studies; minors in French, German, and Hispanic Studies; as well as a Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies. The department embraces the literatures, linguistics, and cultures associated with the languages in our unit. Faculty routinely collaborate with colleagues throughout the university on discipline-based research, community-engaged research, creative activity, academic programming, and co- and extra-curricular activities. Frequent partners include Public Health, History, Marriage and Family Therapy, and multiple areas in the College of Education, as well as the Honors College, the Office of Global Affairs, and local nonprofits addressing needs in the community. Faculty leaders from the department direct the University’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), which aims to develop students’ intercultural competence. The department offers a variety of faculty-led study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe. Job Duties :

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures seeks to fill the position of department chair at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with an anticipated start date no later than July 1, 2024. This is a 12-month position. The Chair is expected to spend at least 50% of their effort on administration and leadership duties, with the remaining 50% devoted to research, teaching, and service.
The successful candidate will lead the department with a strong vision for its growth and continuing contribution to the campus community. This includes:
The chair will also: assimilate information; reason and communicate effectively with students and colleagues; make discrimination’s relating to grades and level of achievement; meet classes regularly and perform all tasks necessary for carrying out normal instructional activities; participate in University and community activities, especially as they may relate to the responsibility to render service in the academic community; meet with students and advise on the academic programs and individual studies; perform research or other creative activity that contributes significantly to the academic field; plan, organize, conduct meetings, and perform all tasks necessary for carrying out normal administrative duties.Minimum Education/Experience :
Qualifications for the position include: (1) a Ph.D. in a discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures or a closely related field; (2) a strong and continuing record of scholarly publications and productivity, commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; (3) demonstrated excellence in teaching and service; and (4) administrative experience or evidence of management skills commensurate with the position.
