Position description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior or Assistant Specialist in the Carbon Removal Lab, in the area of forest products and woody biomass.
This Scientist will assist University of California Coopertive Extension staff and partners, e.g. USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region (USFS) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), in monitoring, evaluating, and displaying current and future wood processing infrastructure capacity throughout California.
This position will support University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension (UCCE) woody biomass utilization activities with the USFS and CAL FIRE. This Junior/Assistant Specialist will contribute to monitoring and evaluation of a competitive woody biomass and wood products utilization infrastructure, which supports ecosystem restoration, hazardous fuels reduction, job retention and job creation efforts in California.
The data captured through this effort are critical to understanding and projecting wood utilization capacity and expansion opportunities in California. Results and findings from this effort provide a means to evaluate new policies, business development proposals, and other wood utilization opportunities that enhance prescribed fire/fuels management, community wildfire protection, ecosystem restoration, and stand replacement disturbance mitigation efforts. These results will also enhance national forest products industry and timber product output survey efforts from the USFS Pacific Northwest Research Station Timber Product Output (TPO) and Forestry Inventory & Analysis Section (FIA) with more specificity and timely data than is currently available nationally. The findings from this project inform State and Federal climate change discussions around overlapping carbon, fire management and fuels reduction activities between CAL FIRE and the USFS.
Responsibilities:
Biomass Power Plant and Primary Wood Processing Infrastructure Web Map and Data Tables
In cooperation with the USFS and CAL FIRE, develop and maintain open access platform to deliver information regarding the status and capacity of biomass power plants and primary wood processing facilities. At present, UCCE maintains the only regularly-updated, publicly-accessible repository with spatially-correlated data about biomass power plants and primary wood processing facilities in California (historic, current, and planned).
Biomass Power Plant and Primary Wood Processing Assessment: Periodic Statewide and Sub-Regional Assessments
In cooperation with the USFS and CAL FIRE, collect relevant industrial information from individual primary processing facilities to update the data table to ensure quality and accuracy of data used in industry infrastructure maps, and for use in periodic statewide and sub-regional assessments of wood utilization capacity based on data needs of the USFS, CAL FIRE and UCCE. Create and develop infrastructure maps and periodic assessments. Publish peer-reviewed or non-peer reviewed research based on assessments.
Maintain and update UCCE website access to resources and literature related to wood and biomass utilization activities pertinent to California or authored through the UCCE system and other California high-education institutions.
Assist with completing Annual Performance Review Reports (calendar year basis) summarizing previous year’s activities, products, technical assistance, and provide interpretation about implications for agreement activities over the next 12 to 24 months.
