Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The College of Arts & Sciences consists of seventy-one academic departments, curricula, programs, centers, and Institutes. The College of Arts & Sciences is administered by the Dean of the College, Terry Rhodes, Professor in the Department of Music, and is divided into four divisions, which are overseen by three Senior Associate Deans. All academic departments and curricula are assigned to one of these four divisions Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. These Senior Associate Deans, along with the Senior Associate Dean for Operations & Strategy, Senior Associate Dean for Research & Innovation, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, Senior Associate Dean for Development, the Director of the Office of Arts & Sciences Information Systems, and the Director of Communications for the College, all report to the Dean. The Office of the Dean is responsible for the administration and operations of the College under the Office of the Provost.
During its 200+ year history, the College has grown and thrived and is now numbering more than 800 faculty teaching over 16,000 undergraduate and 2,700 graduate students. It is the heart and soul of the University’s intellectual and educational endeavor. Our faculty includes distinguished scholars, artists, scientists, and performers with international reputations. All are teachers as well as leaders in their fields of intellectual and artistic endeavor. Seventy-two percent of upper-class students choose a major in the College.
Eighty-seven percent of the credit hours are taught in the College and there are around fifty different undergraduate degrees offered. Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.FA), and Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degrees are offered. Many of these academic programs also allow students to minor at the Bachelor’s level as well. Most departments and curricula also offer masters and doctoral degrees through the Graduate School.
Position Summary:
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Program for Public Discourse is in its fourth year at UNC. The program is designed to support a culture of robust public argument through curricular and extra-curricular engagement, equipping students with the rhetorical and deliberative capacities to serve Carolina and beyond as citizens, leaders, and stewards of democracy. Job duties will involve skills related to research, writing, accounting, and communication. Examples of responsibilities include handling receipts for reimbursement, helping plan the budget for yearly programming, and managing the promotion of events via the Program’s newsletter and social media. Attending events outside of regular business hours is required. These events occur approximately 4-6 times per year.
This position will interact with a variety of Carolina constituencies including senior officers, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members, and have many opportunities for personal growth and career development. 40% – 60% of the work done for this position will be remote. This position will report to the Faculty Director of the Program for Public Discourse, Sarah Treul Roberts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent organizational skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Familiarity with a higher education setting preferred.
