Salary:
$26.31/hour – for applicants with less than 2 years of full-time law enforcement experience
$29.21/hour – for applicants with 2 years or more of full-time law enforcement experience
$72,467.20/current annual salary after 5 years
Up to $5,000 signing bonus
Pending final approval, starting rate will include a 3% increase. The Board of Trustees meets on 9/20, after that time we should be able to accurately reflect the true starting rate.
Basic Function:
Participates in extensive field training program and receives instruction in enforcing state laws and University and departmental rules and regulations, patrolling University property on foot or in vehicle, providing emergency and non-emergency services, conducting investigations, writing reports, controlling and directing traffic, performing crime prevention activities, and engaging in community policing. Reports to Police Sergeant and/or Police Lieutenant.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
With the guidance of Police Officer II or Police Sergeant, patrols grounds and buildings on foot and in vehicle, protects lives and property, recognizes and reports safety hazards, prevents crimes, enforces state laws and University and departmental rules and regulations, answers calls for service/assistance from people on University property, resolves conflicts between persons or groups within campus community; carries firearms, apprehends and arrests violators, transports prisoners to police station, court, or jail; registers and books prisoners; detains and locates treatment for hazardous or self-endangering individuals; locates lost persons, files affidavits, serves warrants, and appears in court as required.
Learns proper method of investigating complaints, conducting criminal and accident investigations, making inquiries, taking and recording information, submitting written reports, and conducting continuing or follow-up investigations.
Participates in roll call (e.g., reviews assignments, discusses special concerns, anticipates potential problems, and determines need for additional training).
Provides or assists in providing services (e.g., money escorts, locking and unlocking buildings, giving directions, assisting drivers with unlocking vehicles, jump starting, obtaining fuel and tire inflations); answers questions and advises public in regard to law, policy, and features of the University.
Engages with individuals and/or groups within the community in support of community oriented policing philosophy.
Monitors parking facilities (e.g., checks parking permits, issues traffic tickets as necessary, directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic).
Conducts surveillance and tactical operations as trained and directed.
Performs security functions at special events; makes emergency medical runs in patrol car or ambulance; learns to provide emergency first aid to victims; assists other law enforcement agencies in conformity with existing mutual aid agreements.
Performs necessary routine maintenance on department vehicles (e.g., filling the fuel tank, checking the oil, and changing flat tires).
Learns to perform routine administrative duties related to police work (e.g., completes reports of police activities, keeps log of unusual incidents, dispatches police officers, answers telephone, etc.).
Learns to operate computer to access law enforcement records.
Receives Ohio Peace Officer basic training.
Performs related duties as trained and required.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of two years (i.e., 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of college level academic credits in Criminal Justice Studies, Law Enforcement, or other job-related field (e.g., political science, psychology, government, sociology, etc.) or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be twenty-one years of age at time of commission. Successful completion of extensive applicant selection process which may include: written assessment, background investigations, pre-employment physical exam, polygraph examination, physical fitness test, psychological assessments, scenario based assessment of specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs), hearing screening, controlled substance screening, and administrative interviews.
License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license with safe driving record. Eligible for acceptance at Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy. During a one year probationary period, Police Officer I must complete and be certified by Ohio Peace Officers Training Program, and complete extensive departmental Field Training Program. Upon successful completion of probationary period, Police Officer I will be eligible to be reclassified to Police Officer II.

Assessments:

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Exposed to law enforcement hazards (e.g., gunfire, driving at high speeds, etc.) and variable weather conditions; occasionally requires extended periods of walking, standing, or physical exertion (e.g., running); may work varied hours and shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in exigent and emergency situations; requires on- and off-campus travel.
Additional Information:
The process is anticipated to be completed in approximately four months.
A valid driver’s license with a safe driving record is required [no more than 6 points on license at time of appointment].
