Library Specialist
Under general supervision, the Library Specialist will perform skilled library duties at the paraprofessional level requiring an understanding of library-wide practices and procedures as well as specialized knowledge of specific library functional area. Accesses, edits and/or inputs data into various library databases for the purpose of processing, retrieving and/or maintaining information within a specific functional area.
Customer Service Focused: This position is focused on customer service and daily functions of the University Libraries service desk. Serves as first point of service at the library service desk. Performs high level circulation duties and provides basic reference assistance. Assists patrons in accessing and using library resources and technology equipment. Maintains a presence in the library when on duty so that patrons know whom to seek for assistance. Assists with opening and closing the library. Enforces library and University policies and procedures, including emergency procedures. May resolve building, equipment, safety, personnel emergencies, and patron issues. Answers assigned departmental email accounts, resolves issues, and refers communications to other library departments if needed.
Makerspace Experience: Works cooperatively with IDEA Hub Makerspace Coordinator on day-to-day makerspace tasks, such as the 3D printing and Glowforge services. This includes, but is not limited to, running prints or cuts, coordinating with users on designs, troubleshooting print issues, machine repair and maintenance. Communicates with Makerspace Coordinator and colleagues on machine issues and maintenance schedule. Records statistics on 3D print service usage. Stays up to date on university safety guidelines and training for equipment in makerspace. Researches and recommends new makerspace equipment or software.
Reporting Duties: In cooperation with Head of Access services, this position is responsible for recording and reporting daily, monthly, and yearly statistics for the Access Services department. This includes recording statistics on gate count, study room usage, fulfillment financials, and circulation, among others. Maintains procedures documentation on how to record statistics. Coordinates with student supervisors to record and report statistics on student management. Plans, communicates, and implements periodic headcounts for library usage and records findings. Makes suggestions to Head of Access Services and Analytics Team in any changes to statistics. Takes directions from Analytics Team if changes are needed to statistics procedures.
Library Technology: Assists in implementing the library technology and equipment collection, including suggesting new items for purchase and maintain the equipment and monitoring its usage.
Provides technical support to library patrons and staff for printing and computing. Assists in maintaining public and staff computer hardware and software, including running updates, works with IT on troubleshooting issues, and sets up new software and systems. Trains library patrons and staff to use new library technologies. Recommends software and hardware for purchase.
Keeps current with IT Division standards and procedures.
Strategic Planning and Events: Provides input to and assists with strategic planning for the Access Services team and University Libraries division. Suggest innovative ideas to improve library public services. Participates in division sponsored events and other activities to make information and technology resources available to students, faculty, and staff. May serve on library-wide committees. Communicates and coordinates with other library departments. Performs other duties as assigned.
Student Employees: May prioritize and assign tasks and projects and give work direction to student employees. May assist in training student employees.
This position primarily works evenings and weekends. Assists with opening and closing the library; may resolve building, equipment, safety, personnel emergencies, and patron issues.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
1-2 years’ library experience and familiarity with an automated library system required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Reliable, dependable, and flexible with a demonstrated customer service focus
Ability to learn and follow detailed circulation procedures, library and university policies
Ability to work cooperatively with library patrons and c-workers
Strong understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Excellent Communication and interpersonal skills
Strong computer technology and internet skills
Public service experience in a college or university setting preferred
Familiarity with library database searching preferred
