Definition: Perform firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue work in the protection of
life and property from fire, accidents, natural disasters, or other occurrences. Perform fire
prevention activities, emergency preparedness and training activities. Perform equipment and
station maintenance.
Principle Duties: Perform all fire suppression activities involved in the confining and
extinguishing of fires using appropriate gear, tools, and extinguishing agents. Participate in the
clean-up, salvage, and overhaul of a fire scene. Operate various sized hand lines flowing at
different gallons per minute unaided and/or assisted by other firefighters; advance charged and
uncharged hand lines into structures and up ladders. Operate equipment, apparatus, and use
tools including aerial apparatus, generators, air compressors, hoists, semi-automatic external
defibrillators, saws, extrication tools, and self-contained breathing apparatus as required.
Provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to the sick and injured, work with ambulance
contractor personnel, hospital staff, and Medical Director as required. Participate in training and
instruction programs through individual study and scheduled drills and classes. Maintain fire
apparatus and equipment. Perform routine fire station and grounds maintenance.
Working Environment: Work is conducted both inside and outside with exposure to
extreme weather conditions and high hazard situations. Exposure to extremes of heat, sun,
water, temperature changes, noise and vibration, odors, grease/oils, toxic substances (such as
hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalants or skin
contact), smoke, fumes and gases, electrical energy, carcinogenic dusts (such as asbestos), poor
ventilation as well as contagious diseases does occur. Physically demanding work utilizes
muscular strength and endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility, equilibrium and anaerobic power.
Work involves heavy (50 lbs. and over) lifting and carrying, sifting, standing, walking, pulling,
pushing, crawling, bending, kneeling, and climbing to widely varying degrees depending on
circumstances. Must be able to operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited
mobility, slippery, and/or uneven walking surfaces, at heights and move within open as well as
confined spaces. Job requires eye-hand coordination to operate fire and rescue equipment.
Employees must be able to work under pressure/stress in emergency and non-emergency
situations, intermittent intense stress and response factors. Employees must be able to assume
incident command at emergency scenes. Work involves operating both as a member of a team
and independently at incidents of uncertain duration. Work involves shift work hours but may
also require irregular/protracted work hours.
Qualifications: Minimum of 2 full years paid experience with a career department,
approved fire academy, and any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high
school diploma.
Special Qualifications/Certifications:
* Must be at least 21 years of age
* Possession of a valid Colorado Driver License or ability to obtain upon residency
* Possession of a valid State of Colorado or National Registry
EMT-B or EMT Paramedic Certificate (showing current
expiration date)
* American Heart Association – BLS Provider or equivalent
* Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Firefighter I or II
certificate or outside State approved equivalent (ISFAC/ProBoard
accredited). *Special circumstances for obtaining DFPC reciprocity
will be evaluated on an individual basis, speak with a recruiter.
* Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control HazMat Awareness &
Operations – NFPA 1072 Certification or outside State approved
equivalent (ISFAC/ProBoard accredited). *Special circumstances for
obtaining DFPC reciprocity will be evaluated on an individual basis,
speak with a recruiter.
* FEMA Certifications IS100, IS200, IS700, IS800
12-Month Probationary Period Requirements:
Lateral Firefighter:
* Longmont Fire Department Firefighter Year 1 and Year 2 task books
* Longmont Fire Department Driver Operator 101 Program
13-36 Months:
Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control HazMat Technician – NFPA
1072 Certification (may be required – based on department needs)
* Optional
o Longmont Fire Department Company Commander Program
o Special Teams (HazMat, Wildland, Technical Rescue, SWAT Medic)
