Organizational Unit Overview |
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University has a three-fold mission. First, the education of medical students, with an emphasis on the training of rural primary care physicians. Secondly, is training of residents in primary care and specialty areas. Finally, training graduate students and post-doctoral fellows for careers in medical research. The Department of Physiology is one of six basic science departments at the Brody School of Medicine. Physiology includes 22 faculty members, 13 staff members including technicians and administrative personnel, 2 post-doctoral fellows, and 8 graduate students. The department supports the three missions of the School of Medicine. In addition to medical students, the Physiology Department also provides formal classroom instruction to students in nursing, nurse anesthetist, and physician assistant programs. Coursework is offered throughout the year. Graduate students in doctoral and master’s degree programs also receive one-on-one, laboratory-based instruction. The Physiology Department maintains a vigorous research program spanning the slope of physiological disciplines. Research is a major activity of the Department of Physiology, and represents greater than 50% of total faculty effort. Physiology is a central biomedical discipline, important to many medically-related fields. As such, the Department is currently working with several other departments in joint degree programs, including the Bioenergetics Program, in conjunction with the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences, and the Human Performance Labs. Department faculty actively collaborate with faculty in other departments throughout the School of Medicine, as well as with several other universities in the United States. The Department of Physiology is located on the sixth floor of the Brody School of Medicine. It consists of 60,000 sq. feet of laboratory and office space. The Department also occupies space in the Warren Life Sciences Building. The department currently has a budget in excess of 1.7 million in state funds and over 1.2 million in grant funds annually, with several additional grants currently submitted for funding. |
