Winthrop University invites applicants for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with expertise in environmental biology for employment to begin August 16, 2024. The successful candidate will join a collegial environment that includes 16 full-time faculty, over 250 undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and development, and the ability to establish an independent research program that attracts both undergraduate and graduate students. This position requires a Ph.D. in a biological science or an equivalent area (ABDs will be considered). Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2023. Major Responsibilities
1. Teach courses in environmental biology.
2. Teach additional courses that could include Principles of Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, Scientific Process in Biology, Integration of Biological Principles, courses that contribute to the general education program, and/or other courses to total 12 credit hours each semester. The ability to teach biostatistics, insect field studies, and/or invertebrate biology is desirable.
3. Develop additional undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization.
4. Appropriate scholarly involvement in the field of specialization.
5. Effective advising of both undergraduate and graduate students.
6. Engage in professional stewardship to the department, college, university, discipline, and community, as appropriate.
7. Other duties as assigned by the department chair.
Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in a biological science with a strong background in environmental biology. ABDs will be considered for appointment in a non-tenure track position at the rank of instructor if not all degree requirements are completed by the expected start date of August 16, 2024.· Ability to teach environmental biology and additional courses that could include Principles of Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, Scientific Process in Biology, Integration of Biological Principles, and courses that contribute to the general education program. The ability to teach biostatistics, insect field studies, and/or invertebrate biology is desirable.· Evidence of excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and development, and the ability to teach a diverse student body with support strategies for underrepresented minority students.· Evidence of an ability to establish an independent research program that will include both undergraduate and graduate students.· Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and strong personal ethics for mentorship of student research projects.
