Position Summary:
The Western Carolina University School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of Tuba.
We seek an engaging and accomplished performer/educator whose work will model the depth and breadth of musical experiences available to our students in an ever-evolving arts landscape. This is a 9-month per year appointment. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until filled. Contract start date is August 2024.

Western North Carolina is a region rich in the arts, and WCU’s David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts brings together the traditions and resources of the region with the talent of our students to serve as the heart of art and culture in WNC. The Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts combines preparation with performance, community engagement, and business and entrepreneurship skills to prepare young musicians, actors, writers, film makers, directors, visual artists, and designers for diverse careers in the art, film, and performance industries.
The WCU School of Music faculty and students perform 150-200 concerts and recitals each year on Western’s campus and on tours throughout the region and nation. Our student performing ensembles include traditional and innovative performance opportunities including bands, choirs, chamber music, and a wide variety of technology-enhanced ensembles exploring jazz, commercial, and experimental styles. The School of Music offers degree programs in Performance, Music Education, Commercial Music and Audio Production, and a Bachelor of Arts that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:
Primary duties include teaching in and recruiting for an active studio of applied tuba students across degree programs in performance, music education, and commercial music and in a variety of performance styles. Secondary responsibilities include teaching applied euphonium lessons, and may include courses in brass methods, low brass ensembles, coaching chamber ensembles, or other courses consistent with the expertise of the candidate and the needs of the School of Music as determined in consultation with the Director and Dean.All tenure-track faculty at Western Carolina University are expected to pursue peer-reviewed scholarship which may include solo and collaborative music performance, recording, research publication and presentation, and/or guest lecturing.As a member of the faculty of the School of Music, the candidate will take part in school, college, and university committees; serve on recital panels and juries; assist in planning events such as visiting artists, master classes, and recording sessions; facilitate performances related to the instrumental area; oversee studio recitals; and provide academic advising for the students in their studio.The ideal candidate should have a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Minimum Qualifications:
A master’s degree in low brass performance or a closely related field.
A record of demonstrated excellence in teaching and performance indicative of the capacity to excel in fulfillment of the above responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
A completed DMA or PhD in music or the equivalent professional experience.Significant achievement as an educator and tuba professor, and strong potential for future success in academic scholarship and creative activity.Documented experience teaching low brass majors at the collegiate level, including success with student performance in competitions or placement in professional work environments.
