Outpatient Rehab Patient Services Representative
The Patient Service Representative functions in a customer service role and responsible for day to day operations of the front office area. This includes registration of new patients, scheduling and general clerical support. Cross trained in all functions to ensure the smooth operation of the Department. Local travel may be required.
This job is typically the first point of contact and must ensure a pleasant experience for patients and visitors. The Patient Representative interviews patients and/or their representatives to obtain complete and accurate demographic, financial and insurance information, required for billing and collecting patient accounts. Conducts intensive screening of all worker’s compensation, Medicare, Medicaid and managed care patients for pre-certification requirements and provider service eligibility, prior to registration as applicable. Obtains all necessary customer consents/attestations.
Maintains a working knowledge of insurance benefits and coverage verification. Coordinates the collection of estimated patient liabilities, including co-payments when applicable. Responds to customer requests and answers questions regarding various service and account information. Analyzes and rectifies customer concerns using established procedures. Uses computer to access and/or update customer records.
Must be competent in multiple clerical functions, including registration of new patients, completing new patient paperwork, taking minutes in staff meetings, maintaining and entering data into spreadsheets, maintaining inventory of clerical/office supplies, ordering supplies in Lawson, working in the EPIC and OP Rehab EMR computer systems.
Verifies and posts transactions. Follows established procedures for processing receipts, cash, etc. Sorts and files various documents. Assists with general hospital information and directions to departments within and outside the WellStar facility. Refers patients to financial counselor to establish financial arrangements to reduce financial risk for WellStar, helping to ensure that WellStar is reimbursed for its services.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Education
- High School diploma or equivalent
Required Minimum Experience
- At least 2 years of related experience, in a healthcare or institutional work setting
- Previous employment record that reflects “work stability”, as indicated by an average work tenure for previous jobs of at least one (1) year
Preferred Experience
- At least three years of patient access service or patient financial service work experience
Required Minimum Skills
- Typing or data entry competency; work with minimal direction after training; basic computer skills; insurance terminology and pre-certification/authorization process preferred; familiarity with routine office equipment
- Demonstrated professionalism, effective communication skills and active listening. Medical terminology including coding needed (CPT-4, ICD-10, and HCPCS) Knowledge of insurance filing and requirements.
