Functions (Job Duties)
POSITION PURPOSE
Perform experimental tests and technical laboratory procedures utilizing
research animals in support of scientific medical study and research. Work routines are procedural in nature involving moderate complexity
and the ability to operate scientific apparatus or technical equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
– Conduct experimental tests
and participate in medical and scientific research utilizing laboratory animals, e.g. mice. Prepare study animals in accordance with
research protocols. Provide routine animal husbandry in the care housing, feeding and handling of research animals utilized for experimental
study.
– Set-up and prepare experimental test and research procedures. Operate experimental testing equipment and scientific
apparatus, e.g. microscope, infusion pump, etc. Administer drugs (e.g. anticancer) in accordance with research protocols; monitor reaction,
response and survival rates.
– Maintain and monitor laboratory equipment and material and supply inventory. Order and maintain
stock; contact appropriate vendor representatives. Clean laboratory area, equipment and supplies.
– Interface with research
investigators, medical professionals and graduate student technicians regarding experimental testing procedures and research protocols.
Assist students in routine procedures; train in research methods and procedures as necessary.
– May assist in compiling, recording
and reporting research and testing results. Consult with research investigators and professionals regarding research protocols and
evaluation of study progress.
– Perform related work as assigned.

Unique Duties
This classification is designed to perform complex experimental
tests and procedures utilizing technical equipment in support of scientific medical study and research. Work activities are procedural and
involve the operation of specialized scientific apparatus or technical equipment, e.g. microscopes, infusion pumps, etc. In addition, work
activities are subject to standardized practices and procedures. The incumbent is expected to have knowledge of specialized methods,
materials, techniques and procedures used in laboratory experimentation and research. Work activities are performed given the following
working conditions factors, i.e. extremely light physical effort, good environmental conditions, moderate controllable hazards (animals) and
normal sensory attention. This classification is generally located in a teaching and research department in a School or College of the
University. This classification reports to and receives work direction from a research investigator, medical professional, faculty member or
management level position.
Qualifications
– High school graduate or equivalent combination of
education and/or experience; supplemented by coursework in biology, chemistry and/or basic laboratory sciences. Bachelor of Science degree
preferred.
– Reasonable knowledge and experience in animal husbandry, e.g. care, feeding, housing and handling of research animals.
– Reasonable knowledge of and/or experience in a teaching and research laboratory.
– Ability to communicate effectively
with others.
– Strong organizational skills; keen attention to detail.
– Typically, incumbents have held positions in a
teaching and research laboratory or medical facility.
Preferred Qualifications
-Able to
conduct cell culture, maintain cells in a sterile environment, as well as conduct isolation of cells for analytical assessment using basic
chemical extraction techniques.
