Functions (Job Duties)
JOB PURPOSE:
Responsible for the day to day management, administration, and supervision of
the accounting staff to assure the timely and accurate completion of required tasks and responsibilities. Maintain and enhance University
accounting practices and financial reporting. Serve as a seasoned accounting professional in the application of theory and principles of
accounting. Perform complex tasks with direct responsibility for critical and more challenging departmental procedures and
assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversee the selection, development and evaluation of staff. Determine staffing needs. Assign
and monitor work. Evaluate progress of work in the department and institute changes as necessary to improve operational efficiency and
improve internal controls. Assist with the development and implementation of new procedures and programs to improve department operations
and ensure overall objectives and/or mission is met.
Oversee internal and external financial reporting requirements. Compile and
analyze financial information in conjunction with preparing financial statements and supporting schedules. Ensure that all financial
reporting deadlines are met and financial records are maintained in compliance with prevailing policies and procedures. Oversee and monitor
Central Accounts for fiscal integrity.
Facilitate the processing of financial transactions in accordance with University policies and
procedures. Preparation responsibilities as well as review of accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations.
Process and review journal vouchers.
Play a critical role in managing the Year-End Close Process, the assignment of year-end tasks,
and related staff training, as needed. Manage the year-end task list to ensure all year-end tasks are completed in a timely manner. Serve as
primary reviewer and/or preparer on certain year-end tasks. Preparation and review of certain financial statement components.
Assist
in the analysis and implementation of financial reporting changes (GASB pronouncements, etc.) with primary responsibility for the
implementation of and on-going maintenance of the new lease standard.
Provide direct support to the Director of Accounting as it
relates to the management of endowment, investments, and development related accounting and tasks.
Perform other related duties as
assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field from an
accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE:
Supervisory experience in a large complex accounting environment. A minimum of 5
years relevant and comprehensive experience in financial statement preparation and journal voucher processing. Demonstrated and specific
knowledge and previous hands on experience (through the ranks) with operations and procedures in a large accounting operations. A minimum of
5 years comprehensive and in-depth experience in the use of Microsoft Office suite of products especially Excel and Access and similar
analytical and reporting tools. Extensive knowledge of Banner administrative systems and previous experience in a university environment are
highly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated, comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting
principles generally and particularly relating to fund and/or college and university accounting and GASB. Reasonable knowledge and
understanding of University policies and procedures in a large and complex environment.
SUPERVISORY SKILLS
Ability to delegate
work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to foster
teamwork among staff members. Provide support to teammates when tackling complex projects.
CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS
Ability to
actively serve customers, both internal and external to the University. Resolve issues and provide timely and sufficient
follow-up.
ANALYTICAL SKILLS: Keen ability to make valid and reliable evaluation of information with demonstrated attention to
detail.

Independent and innovative self-starter who can display an ability to learn rapidly and adapt quickly
to changing situations.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in
writing. Ability to develop and conduct effective training programs.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
Proficient in the use of complex
financial management system software, preferably with Banner or comparable software in a higher education environment. Comprehensive and
in-depth experience in the use of Microsoft Office suite of products especially Excel and Access and similar analytical and reporting
tools.
LEADERSHIP SKILLS
Ability to lead and influence staff, make difficult decisions, function with integrity and
demonstrate sound judgement.
